How old were you when you did your 1st IM?

And how many races had you done before it?

55 - last year. My 5th season of triathlon, it was my 27th race, and was preceded by nine 1/2irons.

21yrs old (GFT '97)

3rd season of racing

Probably 15 tris (maybe 2 1/2 IM’s & 2 marathons)

.

25 years old during my 4th season of triathlons. 11 races before it (one 1/2 IM).

41 y.o.

Dozens of races before though; mostly Olympic or halfs. Lots of bicycle racing too all through my late teens and twenties.

24 Kona, maybe 2 year of racing, a couple of halfs, lots of Olympics and sprints
.

Tai,

Total newb question here, but always wondered…do you have to qualify for Kona? Locals have an exemption?

Ok go ahead and smack me.

Thanks!

44 yr young, 3rd yr of triathlon, 2 HIM previous (first the year before, second in prep for the full) and maybe 10 sprint/oly. It was a bit too quick, but I have since done 2 more and will probably do another next year - beware they are addicting.

we have it easier than everyone else for the most part. If you live on the Big Island you have around 1 slot per age group at a local qualifier, this year the Honu Half Ironman. Then there are an additional 30 or so slots for 3-year Hawaii residents in general (where I fall) at the same race. I may have the slot allocation a bit off. Some age groups especially the Big Island slots are pretty easy to get a slot in. Others are a little tougher. Last year I finished 5th overall and didn’t get in, actually I would have needed to win the race to get a slot, I ended up like 4th in my age group at 5th overall… It’s pretty competitive for the Hawaii slots but we only have to do a half, it’s on home turf, and if a non-Hawaii person beats you they don’t count:) The race itself is pretty tough too, one of the more brutal halfs I’ve done or seen.

I guess no free lunches for anyone eh?

Thanks for the info!

25 and in my 10th year of triathlon. I’d completed Nice (4km / 120km / 30 km) 4 years earlier though.

I think I was 23 and I had done about 30 races prior including a number of 1/2’s.

Interestingly (perhaps) I was over 2 hours faster 10 years later in Canada. My first was Hawaii.

Did my first IM @ 18. 6 in total, including IMH. 13 1/2s and 4 OD also. Dozens of sprints etc. Ive just turned 22, and planning on doing another 2 or 3 (if I qualify for Kona) next year. Cant wait!

52, 3 years of tri’s, about 15 races with 3 1/2’s preceded by 13 years of duathlons.

24 years old. 2nd season of tri’s. 10 races before. What the hell was I thinking. 1996 Ironman Canada.

I was 30 when I got my ass handed to me at IMCAL in 2000 (4:30 run split…OUCH). I’d been racing tri for a decade, had done at least 50 races, and just assumed my 4:32 1/2 Vineman time would translate into a low 10 hr IM time…how PAINFULLY mistaken I was.

21, in my second year of triathlon. I had done two olys and three sprints in the first year.
