My shoes are Sidi Genius from circa 2000. My pedals are Time Equipe Ti Mag (on 3 bikes) from around same time. Both shoes and pedals seems to be holding up fine. Do they need to be replaced? Ever? Thanks.
Shoes can get smelly, and worse, the stiffness of the sole can start to degrade.
I’d keep an eye on the pedals–if a pedal body went or spindle snapped it could be bad.
But if everything seems fine, go with it.
This is just personal:
I look to replace shoes every 3 years and pedals when they start presenting problems or I get a new bike.

Every year…if your racing or riding everyday…think of it like this, would you wear the same shoes for 2 years?

bike shoes don’t have cushioning that tends to compress or fall apart near as quickly as running shoes.
my last bike shoes lasted like 5 years. Obviously if I had been training like a pro or top AGer consistently, that might have been only 2 years =)
My uniform shoes last 4-6 years. I wear them 4-5 days/week.
If your just using the pedals for general training and racing they should be fine. Service them accordingly and they will last for a long long time. The shoes will usually be good until the upper starts to break down (on Sidi’s this takes a while). I beat the hell out of my Genius’s and they still feel like gloves when I put them on. I figure a serious crash or complete seam failure will be the only thing that will make me get a new pair. My T2.6’s however are on their second year, still holding up extremely well but starting to smell like Bigfoots dick…

You have some knowledge that I hope never to have.

Or a greater appreciation for Will Ferrell movies.

Hahaha. BigFoots dick is damn funny. Was that from a Will Ferrell movie? I need to rent it right away. Which one?
Does it smell anything like Kermit the Frogs Finger?
going on three years for my pedals and shoes so far so good.

On the shoes, do they still close properly? Is the heel counter still stiff enough? Compare them to new shoes - if they’re a lot more wobbly, replace. If they really seem fine, keep using them.
For me, 11 years is too long, but it depends on how much you ride, the weather you ride in and probably other factors.

My shoes get a ton of use, and have been going strong since 2004. Ive been through 3 pair of pedals and cleats.
Your shoes are obsolete when the colorway is no longer in fashion. For example, if they are not shiny like patent leather, they can’t possible be fast. White shoes are faster than black shoes. Mavic claims that their bright yellow shoes are faster still, if only because your competitors will be bewildered by your fashion sense and lose watts as a result.
Personally,
2 pairs of shoes a years, they wear out, mostly the uppers
Pedals tend to wear out and/or break on a yearly basis, so at least a new pair a year.

… or a used diaper filled with Indian food … or the inside of a wooden leg…
Can’t believe you haven’t seen it. In fact, I’ve been meaning to adopt one of the lines for my new sig quote since it seems so appropriate for all the data-driven debates we have on ST:
“They’ve done studies, y’know… 60% of the time, it works every time.”
Thanks for reminding me:

I get my stuff to last a LONG time. I keep my Dave Scott Ironman expert on the trainer full now. Bought it in 1986. Still has my original Shimano Look style pedals. I replaced the small chain ring but still have the original biopace big ring. Had to replace the shoes about 10 years ago.
I was going to wear ‘Black Beards Delight’ for going out tonight, but now I will take ‘Sex Panther’ off the shelf.
My shoes are going on 4 years, I’ve replaced the cleats every spring.
I’ve never had or seen a pedal failure (not on MTB or CX) so they last until I change styles. I use Crank Bros pedals
on all my bikes, but they seem to be getting out of the Road business so the Quatro’s are likely the end of the line.
I can just replace the cleats every year with regular Candy/Eggbeater… cleats. Not sure what the future holds…
My MTB shoes with a Boa closure seem to be failing after 2 years…the ratchet wheel seems to be a weak point.
