It used to seem like I was getting a new computer every 2-3 years. I just realized that I have had my most recent computer for around 7 years.
Laptops use to be 4 yrs seems to be 5 now. Desktops were like 5 or 6 not sure what they are now.
I started my software business 9 years ago. I’ve had 3 computers. The first was a desktop which I replaced with a laptop so I could take it with me to trade shows and demonstrations. I used it for 4-5 years before upgrading to the one I have now. This past year my partners asked if I wanted to get a new computer to use some “year end” money. I told them that this one (now 2.5 years old) is fine.
I think that computers have advanced enough that you don’t have to upgrade every couple of years in order to keep it working acceptably. I guess it really depends on what you use it for.
If you’re doing heavy duty programming, graphics or computing - then it is probably worth it. If you’re using it for internet, spreadsheets and documents - you probably don’t need to upgrade that often.
Before I started my company I worked as a computer programmer. I turned down a few opportunities to upgrade because I liked the way that my current computer was setup and I didn’t experience any slowness that affected my ability to work.
When I first started, it was every 3 years. Then, it became use until broke. They eventually realized this policy ended up increasing costs and decreasing performance for the company. I believe we are now on a 4 year life cycle.
The main issue is that software developers don’t just stop iterating. They use the increased available computing and graphic power to make their programs more robust. The end result is decreased performance on the older PCs. My old Xeon processor was basically the equivalent of an entry level personal computer by the time it got replaced. The difference was night and day, and we didn’t even get the top of the line Xeon processors.
Just got a new laptop before vacation, it has been at least 3 years. Normally it’s 5 with towers and 3 with laptops.
I work off a dual monitor imac. It says it is a mid-2011 model. I know it was used by another department prior to me and I’ve had it for 2.5 years.
I kinda have the discretion to order a new one whenever I need it. We have a departmental budget so as long as there is money, I can order equipment. I just don’t see the purpose since this one isn’t giving me any issues.

supposed to be 3 years, but I’ve been using the same laptop for 5+ works amazingly well for something with only 4gig of memory, although sometimes it chokes on large Excel files.
waiting for as long as possible in the hope that the replacement will have an SSD (somehow our IT dept has some weird requirements which results in us getting outdated equipment)
Laptops are replaced every 2 -3 years. Policy has varied over time, but ranges there.
I just got a new laptop a few months ago. It varies based on budget, but we usually get replacements every 3-4 years.
I’m pretty sure that my work provided windows tower has an asset tag posted as 2011. Then again, our tech department forces us to use Internet Explorer.
3 years pretty much on schedule. They make us take them home every night so they get more wear.
Sometimes if you change areas they will give you a new one too.
We’re on a 4 year cycle. Definitely not needed as often as just a decade ago. For stuff that I do locally, mostly Office, it works fine. For other stuff I’m on remote servers, so my client doesn’t matter much.
every 2 years, it says the date of lease renewal right on the back of it the day you pick it up from our IT dept.
I don’t know all the terminology, but we have virtual desktops, with everything else remote (and out of state). I can log on to my desktop anywhere in any of our offices or, through citrix, from home or laptop. IT does system maintenance and updates once every two weeks or so.
The only things I have at my desk are two monitors, keyboard, speakers, and a Wyse terminal which gets updated every few years(I don’t know how often, they do it on Saturday nights between 11 pm and 3 am).

We have a 3 year lease deal. So every 3 years give or take a few months because our supplier is generally terrible.
I was just thinking that I’ve had my work laptop for about 4 years now and wondering about the co’s refresh policy.
Then I see an email from the “HelpDesk” that I’m due for a new one, and asking me to click the link to a form to fill out my preferences. But the email and link weren’t from our HelpDesk. The company was running a test to see if employees would fall for an email “scam” and click through to a link. I fell for it. Usually I don’t.
Irritated that I fell for it. Irritated that the company teased me (and others) with this test. Irritated that my laptop is “old”.
Not sure/can’t remember, but they update the exchange and all of that on a regular basis. Supposedly we are getting new work at home set-ups.
I just got a new laptop, I had the previous one since ~2012. They actually tried to give me a new one a couple of times prior to this but I always resisted because the one I had was thin and ultralight (and worked fine) but the newer ones they were dishing out were heavier. I only gave in this time because we switched to Win10 and the old one wasn’t going to work.
2-3 years (hardware age - you might join today and get a 2018 laptop that’d get swapped in 2020/2021) for our software engineering teams. It’s all MacBook Pros so we’ve got a few folks clinging onto the non-touchbar versions (touchbar is a disaster, especially out of the box with the useless Siri button).
