I know that if training is structured right, there is no need to have a complete rest day, as the body should be able to recover w/in 24 hours. Mentally, however, a day off can be amazing, and my first one in as long as I can remember yesterday was tremendous.
How frequently do you take complete days off from any kind of training/exercise, including core work, weights, and other regimented activity?
Life happens. They ‘incorporate’ themselves, often when I least expect it.
The only scheduled rest days I ever take, are one day (typically Sun) the weekend before an A race (I usually go pretty hard the other ‘on’ day), and also the day 2 days before said A race.
Oh, and the day after the race, always.
PS - What are these core work and weights things of which you speak?

They (the 2ish I hours I dedicate to 'em) are the only things that keep my 6’6" frame from dropping to 185 on a regular basis… I’m still new to this multisport thing, haven’t embraced the heroin-chic look yet.
Since I bike commute I typically never have a complete day off, though Monday’s I usually just ride home from work, nothing else.
I ran a marathon three weeks ago and ended up taking the following weekend completely off, I felt amazing afterwards. For the rest of the season I’m going to incorporate a couple fo complete down days following a hard race.
weight comes from caloric balance, not from weightlifting
weightlifting just helps encourage what kind of weight it is =)Hah, you’re definitely right. I should’ve specified… its the only thing making me look like I’m carrying more than 6’6" 185 lbs.
My legs are already huge enough relative to the rest of my body (thank you rowing)… they don’t need anymore help!
once per week. i think the people who rarely/never take rest days put more pride in rarely/never taking rest days than they do in their race performance.
When my job/family force me to. Usually once every 7 to 10 days and always the day or 2 days (i.e. Friday or Saturday for a Sunday race) before a race and the day after a longer race.
