I was out riding and went over a speed bump. My chain came off the biggest ring and was hanging on the crank bit rather than the rings.
Unfortunately this was a problem as i had no tools to help me and had to walk 10k back home. I took my bike to a local shop and they have quoted me $50 to repair it. Does that seem reasonable? The bike is 2 years old and its shimano stuff.
Perhaps I’m not understanding you…The chain just jumped off of the rings? If so, can’t you just put it back? If the chain actually broke then yeah…$50 is about right if the shop is looking to sell you a new chain and install it.
If I read this right, the chain is not broken - just jumped. Pick it up and put it back on the ring - although after two years, you need a new chain anyway.
Yeah, I don’t quite get a lot things about this post either … I’ll assume a typical triathlete with zero bike mechanical skills (I mean no offense here, not everyone cares about that) and the shop “repair” bill is simply for a new chain?
Please share where you can get a 10 speed master link for $2, I would like to buy 20,000 of them to sell on ebay for $6. Cheapest I’ve seen them is about $8. A whipperman will run you $10-12.
But I do agree comletely with you and carry said tools with me on every ride. I have never needed them but I have saved several peoples rides by giving them to them.
I dont use the bike much, the chain just came off, never happened before but dont know what to do. The front changer seems in the way to put it back on. It is not broken.
No one has offered me a new chain its just $50 to put it back on. I assume they need to take the front changer off and put it back on the ring.
I am not a bike mechanic so dont really understand the problem.
Big time. Assuming this is not a troll (not a safe assumption) th OP needs to learn seom very basic bike repair skills (not that this is even a repair). If this is what it seems the bike shop is staffed by crooks.
My GF, Susanherself, who is not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to mechanical things, knows how to diagnose a dropped chain and restore it to its rightful place on the chainring. She thinks that you must be a girl and I think that you must ride the short bus, as well.
