I am selling my old Bianchi on eBay (BTW, it is in great shape, perfect for someone who is, say, 6’0 to 6’1 with normal proportions, the top tube was just too long for me…). I want to have my LBS break it down and pack it for shipping. How much should I pay for the packing? I plan on shipping it myself.
For whatever it is worth, I’ve paid $30 for the service. I know it is a very simple thing to do in your garage yourself, but if my past is any indication of my future, by having the bike shop handle it I saved at least $30 in missing/broken parts as well as the hours of frustration that always follows when I approach my bike with tools.
When I owned my shop the cost for customers was different than for someone who mail ordered everything then came to us in a pinch. We have packed for as little as $25 and as high as $100. Some bikes take more work
$30 is what we charge and I am a tyrant when it comes to being sure the bikes are bombproof. They need to be able to take a direct hit from a TOW missle. If Uday and Qusay had been inside one of our bike packing jobs when the D-Boys came they’d still be smoking their water pipes. Make sure the shop leaves the box open when you pick it up so you can inspect the packing job. If it isn’t, open it while you;re there. Our E-bay feedback consistently mentions our packing jobs. You have to pack it as though someone is intentionally trying to damage it.
