How much can I improve in Half Ironman? The Answer

what were your bike splits?

That is awesome. I saw the pros coming in at Keahou this year around 4:45, I think!

How old are you? I know I can’t ever get that fast, not starting out as I am at 39. But I’ll get as fast as my body allows…

You could also achieve a big improvement by doing a difficult 1/2 IM during the summer for your first, and later doing a perfectly flat 1/2 IM during the fall.

That’s really cool and inspiring: Speed comes first, then endurance. Many examples of this in tri and running.

What’s an average week for you when you are training hard? What’s a really big week?

My goal is to do my first 1/2 IM this summer in about 5 hours (I’m 35). If I progress like you I’ll go sub 4 hours when I’m 40! That’ll be cool … haha. -TB

Congratulation on your improvement!

My results at that distance are not as dramatic; 5:52 to 4:57. However, the lesson learned from the first to last were significant. The bike was the most improved discipline with more, smarter miles, better position, more miles, smarter eating and drinking, more miles… There is no substitute for time on the bike. This of course translated into a better run off a 56-mile TT. Off season weight training was a big factor as well.

Of course, making all the mistake possible in the first one may have some bearing. I hated it when the old timers, twice my age, kicked my butt on their own advice, which of course I did not heed.

That’s great! At your age, you’re not through improving, either! Keep it going, you’ll get even faster…good genes and hard work can produce amazing results…be sure to thank your parents today!

That’s great! I’m contemplating my fisrt half next spring and was thinking I should be able to get under 5:30 easily, if I train right and everything goes well. Nice to see such improvement.

Second triahtlon ever, and first 1/2IM in 2004 4:42 (with a very slight tailwind on the bike) - S 37’ B 2:30 R 1:30 + 5’ transitions

Goal for 2005 4:15 with S 32’ (might be dreaming here), B 2:15 (planning on purchasing a real Tri bike instead of my road bike with shorty clip-ons + bought a trainer to increase miles this winter), R 1:25 & Transitions 3’

Does that sound realistic?

interesting. my worst feeling was at the end of a hilly Olympic distance, but then Tom said it was like getting in a hurt locker for a couple of hours.

hey, 5:52 down to 4:47 is pretty good, IMHO.

Joey,

good job negative splitting the run, mate. It got pretty hot out there!

Ciao,

Yo Joey,

I am getting about a 8 day low training period this year. Last year I took 31 days - way too much.

This year my coaches Marc Becker & Brett Sutton (www.ironguides.net) gave me until Dec. 1st. I start then with a run/swim focus. My bike is fine now, and I will probably lose some of the speed, but I will get it back before IM BRA in May next year.

I am really enjoying this time down, last night I went to my girlfriend’s parents, had some wine, fine dinner, then some delicious coffee. It is too bad I only have a week’s worth of this this year. But I have some pretty big goals for 2005, so I oughta start working on them soon. I was actually supposed to not rest, but I am feeling really burned out and tired. besides, i was very sick before the 1/2 IM, so I need to recover first.

Marc has turned my training upseide down and the difference is obvious. I was very pleased with the result at MiamiMan.

How much rest are you getting from Mike?

I rode a 2:13 something, 2:14 with transitions. Gave me plenty of time to do the run, so i decided to do the first lap fast, and build a lead big enough nobody would try anything funny. I had 7 minutes on Darrin 7 k to the end, so I knew I could finally take the foot off the gas and just enjoy the last 7 k. I figured I could loose a couple minutes and still cruise in, so I took the opportunity.

My computer is an Ergomo power meter. I was able to pace my efforts on the bike greatly because of it, and it really helped build the lead I had by T2. You can find a lot of info on it at www.ergomo-usa.com. I believe it retails for $1200. Best investment you can make for your money.

Although I am only 23, I have been doing this for 8 years ( 4 1/2 as a pro).

Racing as a pro works for me and I can make a living at it, but it is certainly not a whole lot of money, and a whole lot of work. but I love what I do and certainly beats the office gig. In fact I have never had another job in my life but pro athlete.

2005:

Main races: IM BRA, IM FLA

B Races: 1/2 Ims with money prize ( Great Buckeye, Spirit of Racine, Mountaineer Tri), and I would also like to improive my placing at Sky Bank ( 2ndthis season).

My calendar for 2005 will be on my website as soon as I have everything inked. I may also do 1 Formula 1 race and a couple ITU Races.

Ciao, and enjoy the rest! I went riding yesterday, I can’t sit still!!! Today I am going Mountain Biking.

hey felipe, you said that marc at ironguides helped turn your training upside down - how so? the results speak for themsevles but i’m always curious to see behind the curtain. thanks.

Marc has done too many things to explain here. I will try toexplain some:

  • He has changed my approach to training and aerobic capacity. He has shown me that aerobic work goes a long, long way.

  • He has mad eme see how much hard work is necessary to achieve results I want and need to be where I want to be.

  • He has taught me many many valuable lessons on how to approach adversity, not only in triatjlons, but in life. Brett and Marc’s philosophy falls into " teaching you how to approach life’s obstacles, and THEN apply it to racing/training". I think it works ver, very well.

For as long as I race I want to be coached by him, and he has become a good friend of mine - great guy, great coach. And I am not trying to sell his services or be sappy. Believe me, the less people he coaches, the better it is for me!
