How much and how many?

Hey everyone!

I was thinking today as I rode the fluid trainer looking out at the 20 degree crap we are having here this month. How far, and how many hours do you guys log on your bike during a given week? I have scheduled my trainer rides according to certain TV shows that don’t require a lot of focus. Unlike some of you that have mentioned watching movies I seem to have trouble with that. Must be the old can’t walk and chew gum at the sametime problem

last week was the beginning of base training (4 sessions for 7 hours total): 45,45,90 min, on the trainer, 4hrs on the road. Earlier when it was cold and wet in Seattle, only 2hrs on the road. I don’t have a tv in front of my trainer. I usually just listen to the ipod or watch a spinerval dvd on the computer. I don’t usually watch a movie because I lose focus and ride too easy. I have no idea how people ride 4-5 hrs on their trainer.

I hear you on the 4 hour thing on a trainer. Boredom would do me in. I have been doing some outdoor riding on a Singlespeed mountain bike I have set up and it has been tough with the cold. It sounds like you and I are doing about the same amount. Although this Singlespeed mountain bike is a killer on the legs. I am running a 38/17 and its pretty tough. I can’t wait for the weather to break and see how much faster I am from the punishment of riding this bike this winter. I hope it pays off

I get about 12 hours a week on the bike right now. Only ~1 hour is trainer time, and that is 20 minutes at a time.

I am in Northern California and the weather is not awful right now

i’m in upstate NY and right now it is 13 degrees outside and I am doing all of my training inside and 2/3 races on the weekend in warmer climates (35-40 deg). That being said I do 8-10 hrs/wk. about 6 of which are inside during the week in between and after classes. My base miles are a thing of the past and most of my riding is pretty intense LT training. I can’t wait for the sun to come out in April and our races to get longer, and riding outside becomes feasible again- then my grades will really suffer!

In Montana and Idaho (and even southern Alberta and B.C. I bet) we have been out on the roads for a month now! Droughts are not all bad. I am also greatful to have a touring/cross bike with 32mm knobbies, as its gravel and crap galore until May or so … Last week I did 4 hours on the road (2+ for my long ride) 1 hour spin class and 1 hour on the trainer. My goal for my first semi-big bike week next week is 7 hours total, however it works. 12 hours riding in one week is still beyond my reckoning at this early stage in my career

Since mid January, I’ve been on the trainer most every day, for 2-2.5 hours. I workout 6 days per week, so it’s been about 12 hours on the trainer per week. One one of the days per week I’ve been doing 90 mins on the trainer and then a 6 mile run (45-50 mins). I have only about 80 miles outside total (very sad). My trainer broke last week, so I just just been running and swimming this week. It’s the first time in the pool since september. Man, that was a shock! The trainer should be better tomorrow, so it’s back to the 2 hours a day. My races aren’t until sept, so I’m trying to take it easy right now.

You are cranking it out Colin!

2-2.5 hours on the trainer you deserve credit in my book. I just can’t get past the boredom for that long. I should also preface that before not to long ago it had been sometime since I rode a road bike again. I live in an area of Michigan that has a tremendous amount of great singletrack MTB trails right out my front door. I ride these trails on a regular basis logging on a fairly large amount of miles each week when the weather is playing fair. I bought the Singlespeed this year to try and circumvent the winter and ride all year. I have done pretty well in doing that but there have been days that it was just too cold to ride. I did an 18 mile ride last month with the temps in the single digits and I thought I was going to die. I came back to the house with my eyelashes totally frozen up with ice. Like I mentioned before I hope this type of effort pays off on the road this year. I know I am going to be faster on the trails when I get back on my geared suspension bike. This Triathlon stuff is new to me and I am not sure how well I am going to do with it. I am a little concerned due to the fact that I most likely spend too much time in the Gym lifting weights. I do not have the typical Tri build as to say. Rather one that would be more like a defensive back in football if that makes sense. Anyway…Sorry to ramble on, just interested in where I might be in regards to what others are doing. Especially ones with a few years experience.
