Curious to see if many do this? I find it real hard to tell any difference between say 175 and 172.5, but I’m wondering if many here like the bigger crank maybe 175 on their road bike and then go quite short with a real low position on the TT bike?
165 on tri bike, 172.5 on road bike. I’m not sure I could objectively tell a difference.
170 on tri, 172.5 on road. Can’t tell a difference.
170mm - road bike.
165mm - tt/tri bike. Shorter crank very helpful in opening hip angle, maximizing spin, and utilizing optimal aero position (low front, flat back, etc).
175 on road bike, 180 on my TT bike (when I had it). Could tell a slight difference, mainly on the upwards portion of the stroke.
165 Tri and 175 road
Also have a few of my athletes that I’ve fit on different lengths a 155/170, 160,172.5 and 165/175
.
165 on Tri 175 on road, I can not tell a difference between road and tri bike, primarily because of different bike positions, but I could tell a difference between 165 and 175 on my tri bike. The 165’s got me spinning faster and more comfortably and that converted to a faster ride.
165 on TT and 170 on road. I can definitely tell the difference and the shorter cranks on the TT bike has made a world of difference getting comfortable in the aero position.
I use 180,175,170,165,and 155 but mainly I stay setup on the 180s for both bikes. Longer cranks and bigger gears are my favorite setup for any road or TT bike.
TT bike = 165mm
Road Bike = 172.5
MTB = no clue
32" inseam
73" tall
.
170 tri, 172.5 road.
I used to be 172.5 on the tri too and I was fine. I could probably go right back to it and be fine.
165 on tri bike, 172.5 on road bike. I’m not sure I could objectively tell a difference.
Same here, but 165 tri bike, 170 on road bike. If they were swapped, I probably couldn’t tell.

Many.

155 on the TT bike, 162.5 on the road bike. I also have 165 on my track bike because I haven’t replaced them and I can definitely feel a difference there. 162.5 is at the outer edge of what I can handle in an aggressive position. I will be replacing the track cranks with some cut down to 153 (155 isn’t an option). I struggle to be comfortable and generate power on the longer cranks.
Due to a bike fit, I switched to 170 on the TT bike (175 on road bike) and feel like I can produce more power in my TT position because of it. I have very tight quads so I think the shorter cranks have helped alleviate some of that at the top of the pedal stroke. I don’t have any hard data that they have helped besides that of faster race times but that could be due to better position also.
Feel the difference in bikes not in crank length.
tt = 170mm
Fixed gear = 165mm
Road = 172.5mm
mtb = 175mm
The all do the job for their intended use. I would not change any of them.
155 and 172.5. Can’t really tell. It’s about the fit, not the length.
