300?
300?
I go by months and look of the shoe. sole looks worn and has the “wrinkles” in the sole, time for new ones.
can last me 6months+ (500miles?)
300 was the rule when I ran a lot more though
Big guys sooner, little people later. Or just get new when you what them.
During my marathon build last year, I was only getting about 280-320 miles before I would feel it in my foot and/or achilles. I would buy 2 pairs at a time and alternate shoes each week.
Totally depends on the shoe and your weight/footstrike. Many of my Saucony’s in the past were shot after 200 miles. Asics (at least their outsole) seem to last forever 500+ miles. The outsole of my Hoka Bondi B’s were shot after 100 miles (which is why I recommend only wearing them on natural surfaces). Racing flats many last a long time (in terms of months) since you only wear them when racing but in terms of miles - I tend to rotate them out on the early side.
I agree that 300 is a fair estimate across the board but several factors can alter that estimate.
as a bit of a self experiment I once went something like 3 years with the same shoes…and they were racing flats. My opinion (at the time) was that you really didn’t need anything other than something to protect your feet. I broke down and bought a new pair of flats last year because the old ones were falling apart. Then I decided to get a set of training shoes last fall…shocking how much more cushion they had ![]()
I’m 200 pounds…so take that for what it is worth.
I’m good to 300-350 by then my legs start to feel beat up. But I also have at least six pairs in rotation so and they all have varying mileage.
I tend to heel strike a bit and I am lurking around 160 on a 5’9" frame. So I am changing mine around 300 miles. Got to note that I also have 4e wide feet and I usually start to blow out the ball area of the foot around that mileage also.
I go by feel. When my legs start feeling shredded from easy runs I know it’s time. After every run I record the mileage (usually on the back of the purchase receipt) but I don’t count it. When my legs start feeling shredded after easy runs I go back and count up the mileage and nearly every time it’s right around 325 miles.
For me it’s not the mileage of the *shoe, it’s the mileage of my feet *in a particular shoe. I have a peculiar “problem” where I can’t use the same model of running shoe forever. After a while problems develop. Sometimes I can go through 2 or 3 pairs of the same style, sometimes not.
I never keep track of the mileage. I just use them until the shoes (or my body) is over it.
Im 140lbs and avg 50mpw. I get 300mi in my asics ds trainers. the thing is that they never look worn down, but i can tell the difference if i go past 300mi.
I typically rotate between 3 or 4 pairs of running shoes - each has 100 miles less than the next oldest pair. (Yeah. OCD). I’ll retire the oldest one at somewhere between 350 and 400 miles. When a pair gets retired it goes into the knock around/lawn mowing mode.

500 miles is the number I’ve always heard. Depending on how you run, weight, how much rubber is on the sole it could be more or less.
I have been running for 20 years plus. I a m a 5’9" female runner, not too fat, not too thin. I avg 40-50 miles a week and, no joke, get 1000 miles out of my shoes. Are your shoes really worn out after only 300 miles? WOW, the running stores and shoe companies have done a great “sales” job. The one thing I probably do different than many, though, is I NEVER run on the concrete. I run about 75% asphalt, and 25% on dirt. And no, I have never had an injury.
Kayano 300-350 or by feel. 6’3" 183lbs.
Being an engineering geek, I actually keep shoe mileage records on a spreadsheet.
(Ok, It’s not quite that geeky – it’s just an extra column on my training log.)
Anyway, here is my shoe mileage since 2003:
Brooks Adrenaline 658
Brooks Adrenaline 612
Brooks Adrenaline 118
Brooks Adrenaline 503
Brooks Adrenaline 485
Brooks Adrenaline 646
Brooks Adrenaline 493
Brooks Adrenaline 109
Saucony Progrid Trigon 442
Brooks Adrenaline 854
Saucony Guide 334
Brooks Axiom 834
Brooks Revenna 569
Brooks Revenna 691
Nike Lunarfly+2 383
Nike Lunarfly Air 466
My lowest mileage was 109 miles and my highest was 854. This doesn’t include racing shoes, trail runners, and a few others I’ve experimented with (e.g. Newtons).
Nike Lunarfly Air 466
What is this shoe? I’ve been running in LunarFly’s since they stopped the Zoom Elites and my favorite Skylon’s but haven’t heard of the Air. I presume they are the “Breathe” version?

This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I can typically get over 500 from my shoes and go by how my knees feel after doing easy runs like another poster mentioned. I’m 5’8" and 200+. I;ve noticed as my weight drops, the life of my shoes increases. I have a pair of Air Pegasus right now that are still feeling good after 650 miles, but will likely only use them on the dreadmill from this point on. I also rotate two to three different pairs of shoes as I’ve been told and read that you will extend the life of the shoe if you do it. It seemsto be working out. I also try and avoid concrete pavement and sidewalks when practical.
I have a pair of Zoot Advantage shoes and have been very disappointed in the durablility. I have about 250 miles on them and the soles are shot.

Yah, I think it’s really a “Breathe”, not an “Air”. It still says “Lunar Fly 2” on the tongue, but the upper is a coarse waffle mesh. I actually prefer the older finer mesh version.
I’m `135# and a mid-heel striker.
I’ve gotten 500mi from the LunarGlides (although they were probably mostly dead at 400-450.
My Saucony ProGrid’s would start to feel dead in the upper 300’s, but I’d take them to 450. One pair to 500.
I’m working my way through Mizuno Elixers and Brooks Racer ST’s. both are lighter shoes that won’t last quite that long.
