How many lbs. do you allow yourself

to gain in the off-season? Im already at +4 in 3 weeks…I hate seeing this happen.

+4 is nothing…

On race morning for IM WI in September 2003, I weighed 184 lbs. By New Year’s day this year, I hit 210. Before I left for Lake Placid last month, I was back to about 187. Fightin’ weight. I’ve gained about 3 lbs since then. I admit I let it get out of control last Fall a bit, and I hope to keep the off-season gain to under 15 lbs.

Zero. I weigh the same as I did when I graduated from college back in 1979. The only time I allow myself to gain weight is if I lift weights. But, weight doesn’t mean all that much, % Body Fat is much more accurate to use, and I’m at most only 1-2% more fat now than then. I dropped it down lower than my “usual” a couple of times, but I start getting colds and my performance drops…so, right about 8% is where I keep it.

Typically I’ll gain 5-7 lbs over a Great White North winter. I x-country ski, but can’t get into exercising indoors regularly. Doesn’t take long to lose it once the nice weather returns. Most of the weight gain seems to be over the two weeks around Xmas.

+4 is a warm up.

I don’t allow myself anything! It happens without me doing anything!

I try (and fail) to follow several simple rules about eating

  1. Don’t eat anything bigger than your head

  2. Don’t swallow anything that makes your mouth happy. Everyone knows crappy food doesn’t make you fat, nice food does that. Ice cream, chocolate, chips, coke, cake. Spit them all out. You’ll never get fat.

  3. Excercising doesn’t make you lose weight by burning up more calories. Youlose weight because you are away from the fridge for longer periods of time. That’s why you lose weight

same hear… It adds to the post IM depression… I won’t even weigh myself but the “jeans” don’t fit… I guess I am not the only one… I would guess 3-4 pounds which is a lot more when you weigh 124 vs 185!

My Ironman race day weight always seems to be 138. Right now I’m at 146. I saw 148 this past winter, but I saw 140, too. I don’t control my weight too much purposely, and as you can see, normal activity levels (for us weirdos), puts me in the mid 140s. It takes Herculean effort for me to get down to IM weight, or the flu.

About 10 years ago I got obsessed with losing weight and went down to 134. Looked not good.

i used to be obsessed with gaining weight when i was swimming. i saw myself as too little to compete. was abt 179cms (5ft 11) and 70-74kgs (154-163 lbs)
