How many have been helped

by strangers after a bike crash? A few years ago I was found in a bloody unconscious heap by a nurse who happened to be jogging at 10PM after being left in the ditch after a crash. I never got her number to thank her. It didn’t occur to me to do something like this since it is probably her normal running route…

That’s pretty cool, actually.

That’s a really nice note.

When I crashed my bike two springs ago a couple strangers stopped and helped me. They called my parents

I regret not having stopped when I saw House crashing.

I was fortunate enough to be with a group of friends (including 3 physicians) when I got hit by a car. There was one guy in particular who stopped I will always be grateful to… it was a hot TX August day and lying on the sizzling blacktop was actually pretty painful. This guy took shirts out of his car that he had just picked up from the drycleaners to put underneath me. He also threw my bike in the back of his pickup and drove it the 7 miles to our finish point. As a health care professional, I feel responsible to stop if I ever see an accident without EMS/police on the scene. These folks doing it out of the goodness of their hearts…that’s pretty cool.

haveing just been hit on friday and still imobile on the couch, this is on my mind. Everyone was awesome. Including the driver. Portland is pretty cool town. But this really did make me feel loved by strangers. So much help, so much genuine caring. I feel lucky.

And I get to go bike shopping . . .

When I had my crash last year, I was sprawled in the middle of the road and the first person who stopped was a old guy who told me “get up and walk it off”. Luckily the second person who stopped was an ER nurse who did a quick assessment of my injuries. She also called 911 and also asked what my wife’s number was so that she could call her. She was awesome.

Well… I’ve been thinking about the whole random acts of kindness thing this weekend and…

When I heard my neighbor’s noisy derailleur as he was riding by I tuned it for him. He was thrilled. Then I went to my other neighbor’s house and mowed her lawn because I knew she has foot surgery I may get brownies out of the deal</hidden agenda>.

Result: I am feeling in a quite satisfied mood this evening… I need to do this more often.

Indeed, those random acts of kindness seem all to random, don’t they? Good for you…in the midst of our busy days I think we forget that even the smallest acts of “being nice” can pay huge dividends, if to nothing else than your own sense of well being.

Getting rewarded for those acts is always a nice touch…but never necessary.

But for good brownies, well, I might do more than a little act of kindness…!

I was. A week ago today at IMC, a doctor, some race volunteers and other bystanders at the intersection in Oliver where I had my accident. The doctor gave me a quick exam to assess my injuries while the others found a chair, water, and got the identity of the driver.

Also in June 1986, Las Cruces, NM. I went over the handlebars of my bike and face first into the glass / dirt / gravel on the shoulder of the road. Despite wearing a helmet I wound up needing 300 stitches and a plastic surgeon to put the left side of my face back together.

Somehow I didn’t lose consciousness but stood up and waved my arms for help. A couple stopped, called 911, and waited with me until the ambulance arrived. I thanked them at the time but they clearly deserved more. I never discovered who they were.

Earlier this summer, I had a heat exhaustion event while I was out running where I ended up managing to walk about 20 yards before I’d have to stop and rest a bit, walk another 20 yards, rest again…

A soccer mom-type with her kids in the car saw me doing this, and she pulled off the side of the road, scraped me up, and gave me a ride home in air-conditioned comfort.

Thanks soccer mom!

Too many times to count - that note rocks however. I was never so considerate.

Then I went to my other neighbor’s house and mowed her lawn because I knew she has foot surgery

Be honest - you’re like Phil Hartman in “Jingle All The Way”, trying to seduce the her…LOL!

This whole thread clashes with the “slowtwitch people are assholes” thread.

I wonder if the guys who waved me down today will do something like that… Course they asked me if there was anything I could do about a deer that was injured by the road so probably not.

Very cool of that person and the ones who stopped though.

I was. In an accicent where I sustained an AC separation, a nice guy with a truck who saw it, pulled over, gave me a lift. Iasked for his contact info so I could thank him, he said he was just doing the right thing and declined.

The note was a cool idea. Although not accident related, my recent random act of kindness came back to bite me in the butt. On my saturday ride, one of my buddies had a flat and no spare tube so I gave him mine. On the way back in we rode up on a couple guys with mtbs walking towards town. One had a flat so I used my glueless patches and a co2 to fix him up. This was saturday afternoon, the only place to buy tubes and patches locally is closed on sundays. I thought “I haven’t had a flat this entire summer, I’ll be ok” as I headed out for what was supposed to be a 100 km solo ride. About 16 km out I noticed my rear tire was getting soft and turned around. I made it about 2 km and it was flat. I figured since it went down slowly I’d try hitting it with a co2. It held for about another 2 km so I hit it with another cartridge. Nope, it was done. 12 km later I had plenty of practice walking and running with my bike. Lots of people I know passed in trucks, none stopped to see if I was ok. Maybe they assumed strolling down the road in cycling gear and reverse high heels is part of my training program. I’m definitely for helping others but I don’t do it counting on the whole karma thing returning the favor.
