Actually I’m kinda pleased with the responses I’ve been getting. My question, inhertanly negative, “how long WHERE you married”, implying that you had to no longer be married to answer, has had mostly positive "I’ve been married for "X’ years. Kinda cool actually.

I think Tim was trying to delicately point out the difference between “where” and “were.”

I “were” married for about 2 and a half years, and we spent about 2 of those years stationed in different parts of the country which is partly why it only lasted that long.
