I have no idea about where he was bitten by an infected mosquito but I am sure now that it is DF. Apparently it is not the hemorrhagic serotype but still I am not sure how long will take for him to recover. When he was smaller he did not mind much when hit by viral disease as it was only taking his medicine, rest and not attending school. He is pretty serious about this now as last May a rotaviral infection put him out of the national youth olympics just a few hours before boarding the plane.
It took him three weeks to recover from that viral stomach illness and he lost his first race after that. He thought that he was 100% recovered but he found out the hard way that “feeling good” does not mean being completely recovered.
I am wondering if any triathlete has ever been diagnosed with DF and if he/she could share his experience dealing with this disease. Sergio feels very lucky that this happened in the off season but still I am taking strict measures to prevent him from getting back to his training too soon.
Sorry to hear that, may your son have a speedy recovery.
I had both Dengue and Malaria Falciparum. Once, evenat the same time. They felt pretty similar, muscles and head hurt a lot, and high fever and chills. Lost weight due to diarrhoea and being in bed for a couple of weeks.
I don’t know if your son have been given any medications, Dengue normally goes it’s course and then your body beats it naturally.
My best advice is : Stay on the recommended medication for the prescribed time. If you don’t the disease might be knocked back, but gets more time in the body. The cells keeps dividing and doubling and doubling. When they are strong enoug you will get MUCH sicker the next time.
The first time around the doctor gave me Chloroquine. When it came back, I had to take Quinine.
Malaria is something else. I am glad you came out OK.
There was an adult man at the doctor. He was almost fainting and was feeling very, very ill. Her wife was surprised when she found out that Sergio was also there because of DF. I hope Sergio Jr keeps doing relatively OK. I am glad that this disease found him very strong. We’ll see how he does in the next few days.
Thanks for sharing your experience and best wishes,
