I know I inherited the obnoxiously burdensome packrat gene from my father, which is why I still have every tri magazine (U.S., Canadian, British, Australian) I have bought since 2000. Of course, they are completely unlooked-at, and serve no other purpose than mildew-collectors, or potential ballast.
Just curious, though, as to how many others hold onto this stuff forever, maybe just because you might need that article on tempo-running from 2003…or something like that. Ack!
I used to hang onto them for a few years. However, with all the content on the internet I haven’t subscribed to a tri mag in probably five years. I also haven’t purchased any from the newstand in that time. There are no tri magazines hanging around the house anymore. My life does not seem to be devoid of anything positive as a result.
I’ll hold onto something with a purpose…for example, I’m about to graduate from college in May and I got Outside Magazine’s “best places to live” issue a few weeks ago. You can bet that will at least slightly figure into where I go
I got a couple of free subscriptions to Lava and Triathlete. I only kept a couple issues that have training plans I kinda liked. Other than that, I think they’re pretty much all crap.
Speaking of old issues, I am looking for a recent issue from TRIATHLETE that covered nutrition and what pros ate on race day and training days. Any idea which issue that was?

I believe you’re referring to the October 2011 edition of ‘Triathlete’
I have a spot where magazines go. Once that spot gets filled (I think it can hold maybe 20 magazines? I go through what is there and get rid of the oldest / least useful issues. I normally save the ones with pictures of Jenny Flectcher and swim workouts. Like many “healthy living” magazines, there is generally a lot of repeats, like the Men’s health Ultimate Abs workout type stuff. And at least in the Canadian Triathlete I get there is a huge section of topical current races that gets old quickly or reviews of bikes (which apparently are all good).
My subscription is a xmas gift, is fairly cheap and it is nice to have something to flip through and get me itching to get out for a run or bike ride. And there are nice pictures of Jenny Fletcher.
I go through and tear out articles on training that I want to keep and then put them in a specific file (swim, bike run, diet, etc.).
I use to keep the whole mag and it just got out of control.
That’s a good idea. Once in a while I flip through an old issue because there are nuggets in there that will never be obsolete, but the stack of useless information in between gobbles space.
I throw mine out as soon as I’m done reading it. If not, they clutter and pile up. I never reread anything from them anyway, so I’m not missing out on anything.
when i got them (non-subscriber now) my wife would take them to the gym and leave them. i have a stack of mags in my nightstand reading pile that haven’t even had the cover turned back. i guess i get my info elsewhere now.
not to mention, a bedroom is for two things only, and i can’t read a book very well doing either of them.
I have a bit of a back log so maybe 2-3 months until I get around to reading through them, then they go into the recycling bin. Although i do happen to have the last 7 or 8 annual swinsuit editions in a nice stack.
I go back though and look at the pages that I have dog-eared. I then rip that page out if it is of interest; if not, then the whole magazine goes in the trash.
I should start leaving them at my massage therapist or gym to help build the interest in the sport.
