Haile’s 2:03:59 berlin marathon came out to a 4:44 per mile average pace. That would be a 35.5 second 200m, 71 second 400m, 2:22 800m, 3:33 1200m, and a 9:28 2-mile.
In my current fitness level I think I could keep up with him for 1200 meters.
Anyone else want to guess how long they could keep up with him. Even a 71 second quarter is pretty fast for someone who doesn’t hit the track regularly.
1600…maybe up to 2400…but it would be clearly a face of contorted pain and misery giving me up for dead at that point. I’m pretty certain I don’t have 9:28 for 2 miles.
and I thought my friend Judson was a fast runner (he’s a 2:24 marathoner). I think J could keep up with him for a couple miles… I would last about a meter
maybe 400~800 meters if I’m freshly tapered! That is simply fast and at 41yrs old and a few pounds north of 200, this big old body doesn’t move to quickly.
I’m reminded of when my wife and I were watching the womens Olympic marathon and she stated, “wow, those women run fast. I wouldn’t be able to run a but a few miles at that pace.” I said, “honey, we would be lucky to run a few hundred yards at that pace”
Are we talking Geb at his 400-800 speed or Geb at his marathon speed doing 400-800. If the latter, not even 400m. If the former, then 25 m. I doubt I can break 70.5 second for 400m with spikes on a fast track any more.
I never ran the mile, but I ran 7:08 when I was in the armed forces for the 1.5 mile fitness test. I guess my lifetime PR for the mile works out to 4:40ish based on this…based on this, when I was a studly 19 year old, I could run with him for 1.5 miles. Today, I can’t hold that pace for 400m! Where did the speed go?
I’ve recently run 72-74 second 400s and mid 2:30 800’s during interval workouts. Rested, with spikes…I definitely could hang for 400, 600 probably. But a 2:22 800 would be really tough for me. Beyond that, no way…
Back in HS I could hang for about 2 miles, but that was 20 years ago…
