9 hours is a long time to leave a puppy home alone everyday. especially when you first adopt him.

Agreed. That is a long time for a one year-old to be on their own in a crate.

I was lucky. When our dog was first home, I worked from home and was with him all day everyday for the first year of his life.

For less than one year-old dogs there needs to be some interaction or activity every 3 - 4 hours. After the 1 - 2 year mark, they can be left on their own for much longer.

Of course now we have a senior citizen at 12 years old who other than his very short morning and evening “walk” basicaly sleeps all day - and he seems perfectly fine with that.

Hardly. My dog Codybear has the free run of the entire house while I’m gone, and he’s a perfect gentleman. He also has a crate he can go to if he wants to, but it’s never locked. Repeat: I would never lock my children in a room, and I would never lock my dog in a cage. To each his own. :slight_smile:
