Scientists seem to have created self-replicating RNA. It will be very interesting to see where this leads. Curious indeed:
that machine must be GOD!
Close … but not quite …
No doubt.
It’s Fox news. How could you doubt Fox? ![]()
Fox News is just about as accurate as the Bible.
now that we human beings understand and can duplicate lightening, disease, spontaneous combustion and creation of life itself, we need the notion of God less and less.
We should start a pool to guess what will be the last unknown mystery left we need God to explain . . . I bet it will have something to do with the Detroit Lions.
Not sure I agree with you on the “need” for God.
I do agree on the Lions, though.
Do you think they’ll be able to build the Detroit Lions from scratch.
all you need is a stretch of down hill
.
there is only one and there has only ever been one reason for humans to create gods and thats to explain away looming the dirt nap.
I was hoping this thread would not get all serious, but now that you turned it -
I put the whole god thing on the ancient use of psychedelic plants and mushrooms.
I do admit, one appeal of atheism is the attitude that comes with it. Feeling superior to all, self-labelling as the only free thinkers, and making demeaning comments regarding others beliefs has to be somewhat of an empowering, albeit childish, sensation.
Do you guys offer a one-week trial membership?
grin
when we build cathederals to our superiority you might have a point.
Ha Ha. Good one.
It’s not as if some believers don’t use their belief as a self-promoting and other-diminishing tool as well. Certain things have just gotten to the point where they rub me the wrong way.
I guess I just don’t understand how each scientific experiment or increase in knowledge disproves God further? Did I miss something and science made some new natural laws (or universe, etc) or something?
I agree that certain aspects of science seem to dispell the ideas of God the Mechanic, God the Magician, God the Charlatan, etc … but sometimes we get weay to carried away with ourselves and our knowledge, as well as, recognition of what we know and what we just suppose we know.
You are out of your mind if you think Atheism has any sort of special access to superior feeling.
How about Jews being the chosen people of god?
Or good Christian looking down on the heathens that will burn in hell!?!?
Make fun of atheists for being stupid all you want, they are! greedy, stupid, petty, angry little people.
Just like ALL people.
The only difference, is atheists have one particular stupid thing they didn’t buy into that religious people have
Its not a big deal, theres thousands of stupid things people believe, atheists and religious people both.
No need to get upset about the one thing.

I know that was meant as a jab, but this is serious. I’ve always been a bit jealous of “Believers” in the sense that it would be comforting knowing, truly knowing, no matter how crappy things are here I have something far better to look forward to for eternity.
I’ve also thought the same of those that were really not to bright and how nice it would be to not have “Thoughts” constantly running thru ones head, to not necessarily be concerned about certain things because, well you don’t understand the mechanics or “Well that hadn’t occurred to me”. (Note I’m not saying you’re not “Bright”, but I know some people that aren’t. They seem so much “Freer” as they “wander” somewhat aimlessly thru life. They truly are “Living in the moment”, something that is AMAZINGLY difficult for me to do.)
Again the above is not meant as a slam as I’m truly jealous. However as stated in the other thread that is not my or many peoples reality. I simply can’t be a “Believer” as my mind would not allow it. Nor am I all that good at looking at a tree and saying “Wow a tree, neat!”. I look at a tree and my mind splinters into any numerous paths…somewhat psycotic I guess maybe I should get that looked at
Maybe I need to take up meditation or something…

When all things are known and there is no knowledge of god does that not mean that god does not exist? Does not every new piece of knowledge move us one step closer to all things known…assuming knowledge is finite? Assuming knowledge is finite with every piece of knowledge learned and that new knowledge does not indicate the existence of god the odds increase that there is no god and decrease that there is a god.
The unknowns are is knowledge infinite or finite? If it is finite how much knowledge do we poses of the whole?

Go to church - you can get the empowerment you are looking for there without having do the one-week trial.
Although it may not appear like it - I am on sorta your side.
While I do not believe that God exists, I am gleefully willing to assume that God exists. (Ya Ya I know that old line about assuming. . . )
What I mean is, for the purpose of a discussion, or an internal dialog, I will grant the existence of an eternal Creator of the Universe
I will grant that the Bible (and other scripture) has something to offer on the subject (however, there is much chaff to sift through to get to the wheat)
and that Jesus Christ was a valid authority on the subject.
And when I do this, I come to quite different conclusions then what is taught in any church (therefore the atheist moniker)
For me, this approach is far more rewarding and fruitful then to simply accept the testimony of another (be a believer and be done with it).
Just another atheist searching for God
PS We should do some peyote.
