How Ironic--Socialist Vermont Bitches About Government Takeover of Farmland

I expect more from the socialists in Vermont.

Have they lost faith in the concept of “for the greater good.”

Maybe Bernie can smooth things over for this farmer after the Feds take his land in the name of national security.

For your reading pleasure:

The Department of Homeland Security sees Morses Line as a weak link in the nation’s borders, attractive to terrorists trying to smuggle in lethal materials. The government is planning an estimated $8 million renovation here as part of a nationwide effort to secure border crossings.

It intends to acquire 4.9 acres of border land on a dairy farm owned for three generations by the Rainville family. Last month, the Rainvilles learned that if they refuse to sell the land for $39,500, the government intends to seize it by eminent domain.

If a State leans Liberal, does that make every single resident of that State Liberal?

weak link of th enations borders???

What the fuck do they consider the US/Mexican border?

Oh yeah, too difficult to deal with so we’ll focus on US/Canada instead.

Vermont is closer to DC than Arizona is. Thus the elite are more isolated from anyone who might cross in Arizona. That, and those who cross in Arizona aren’t interested in blowing up the city where the policy-makers live and work.

**That, and those who cross in Arizona aren’t interested in blowing up the city where the policy-makers live and work. **

So, there are people crossing the Vermont border intent on blowing up DC?

Do you have a specific example?

I guess you’re a socialist until it is your property that the government wants to take over–then, suddenly, you become a free market advocate, is that fucking priceless or what?

The community is up in arms about this, but again, what about the greater good?

What would Bernie think?

Clearly these farmers need to get their priorities straight.

Yeah, and isn’t that pisser.

The Feds will let murderous Mexican illegals into the country by the truckload, whilst refusing to do jack shit about the infestation in Arizona…but God damnit, those sneaky Canadian bastards, well, let’s confiscate land and seal up the borders in the interest of national security.

So really, this story carries with it a two-pronged level of “douchiness” that I think makes it a winner.

In fairness, do you have evidence that that farmer’s opinions leaned in a socialist direction before this issue came up?

I assume the family wants to be left alone to farm the land and produce milk, all the while collecting taxpayer funded dairy subsidies in order to survive.

Bernie et al, along with the Vermont Legislature (it passed a resolution declaring opposition to the project) are against the project, which only elevates the richness of this story.

Whether the family voted for Bernie, who knows, hopefully someone will ask them.

This comment is interesting though:

“The arrogance of it is breathtaking,” said Brian Rainville, 37, whose parents and two brothers run the 220-acre farm and milk 80 cows on it. “Why are we being asked to make that kind of sacrifice when they can’t demonstrate a public need?”

Notice that the opposition by the family is grounded in their belief that the project is of dubious public value.

Would different circumstances cause them to change their minds?

It appears that they are not totally opposed to making “that kind of sacrifice” in principle.

My point was that those who thought it more important to build the barrier in Vermont (versus AZ) are more concerned with any threat that is close to them. A few million illegals coming over the fence is not as much a threat to their (policymakers) safety as someone who could come in from Vermont and strike DC. Personally, I think they ought to use some stimulus money to build a 30 foot fence on the southern border, and if there is money left over - put one on the northern border.

If you lived in Florida you’d know how dangerous those snowbirds are.

It’s those f’n Canadians that we really need to watch out for!!! Bringing down those socialist ideas and all. I heared that they were the ones doing all of the drafting at IMFL

I’m not understanding…again

14,811 vehicles, 40 vehicles a day. Let’s say on a really busy day they might see 200 vehicles from 8-6. Why on earth do you need 4.9 acres for a facility to see 20 vehicles an hour during PEAK hours. Sound like what they need is to go buy a 1500$ shed from Home Depot, drag it up there and call it good. Space heater in the winter, two guys sitting around 24/7/365 with guns ought to keep them dam Canadians out!

Put a couple posts in the ground to handcuff people too if they decide to do something stupid and voila! problem solved. No reason the cows can’t graze right up to the building. That way we won’t have to pay for someone to cut the grass.

Don’t understand…Who’s congressional district is it? Some of that stimulus $$$$$

Clearly you underestimate the extremist nature of our northern friends.

And throw in a few Molsen too, and you have a highly volatile element looking to enter the US illegally.

I rest my case, we must protect Vermont cows!!!

“Forty-one people were arrested in the mayhem after the Montreal Canadiens’ Game 7 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Some stores were looted and police fired tear gas at hundreds of bottle-throwers.”

Ahhh…the border patrol stop too AND from nowhere, gotcha. I’m guessing someones cousins are going to get a SWEEEEEEEEEeeeet gig playing cards 10 hours a day for 100K a year out of this too

You know, now that you mention it, I have heard things about Canadians and farm animals
.

Or, they can work on their holiday crafting ideas:

.

I’ve been through that crossing many times. Any “busy” times, I avoid the lines at the Highgate border and go over there. It is in the middle of nowhere, without any real roads going to it. It makes very little sense to dump money into that border crossing.

As a side note, rural Vermont is not very liberal.

“Clement Rainville, who was raised on the farm his parents purchased in 1946, has left it for an extended period just twice: his honeymoon and his ** military service in the Vietnam War**, according to his son, Brian.”

still think he’s a socialist?

Well, I dunno…

It’s said that John Kerry served in Vietnam.
