How important is nutrition?

Just curious how people think they would do in their next IM or 70.3 if the only thing they were able to put in their body during the race was water?
Would the average person even be able to finish?

1.2 mi swim = 2112 yds x 200 cal/1000 yds = ~450 cal
56mi bike = ??? cals
13.1 mi run = 1,310 cal

so just the swim and the bike would eat up all your carb reserves (assuming you store 1800-2000 cal of carbs)

not going to be pretty, even for a half

Why are you asking this question?

Some may be able to finish a 1/2, but I doubt if it would be possible to do a full on water only. Maybe possible, but completely miserable.

It is certainly possible.
I work with lots of fit people. Some of whom have little to no knowledge of the effects of proper nutrition during an activity. Yet they still complete endurance type events that last for multiple hours, and are in many cases more strenuous then any of the 3 triathlon disciplines.
So, I wonder just how important it really is. It is almost like it’s a scale. Assuming fitness level is there, you can counter a lack of replenishment during a race or event by having a larger will to finish and do your best.
So I guess I ask because I was bored and my mind was wondering…

This is certainly an odd thread. You say *“you can counter a lack of replenishment during a race or event by having a larger will to finish and do your best”. *You are clearly not going to do your best without any nutrition during the race, no matter how strong your will is.

I think I could finish a half on water alone. Maybe a full, I don’t know. But could I hit my super-duper, A++ 2007 goal of breaking 10 hours in an Ironman? I don’t think so.

Just wondering. What would happen during my next Ironman if I only had one crank-arm on my bike. Gee, I would probally go alot slower, be pissed off the whole race, and having some raging quad muscle.

Serioulsy dude, is this forum that slow to be pondering a quesiton like that? or are you such a newbie that you honestly do not know about electolyte replacement?
