I just joined a Health Club by me which has a 4-5 lane 25 meter lap pool. I was talking to the manager at the gym about it and she told me they keep the water between 84-86 degrees!!! Is it me or does that sound insanely hot? I used to swim at an Aquatic center which was all triathletes and serious swimmers and the water seemed pretty cold when you jumped in. Not 86 degrees. Is seems that they really didn’t do their research or they are catering to a crowd who isn’t serious about swimming and wants to float around in a heated pool. The pool is almost always empty.
Ours is usually kept in the low 80’s. 82 - 84. Some valve broke and it was 88 on Monday and 92 on Wednesday. But usually low 80’s is my overall experience and different pools.

I would doubt that a pool kept that warm is trying to target serious lap swimmers, because you are correct, that is too warm. However if they have an active senior group that comes in for arthritis therpy, it is a good temperature for them. The pool I swim in is a community pool and they keep it around 84-85 degrees. If it gets below 83, the seniors start complaining.
The standard competition water temperature is about 78F plus or minus one.
My unheated outdoor pool runs 88-89F in August because they don’t have a cooling system. Best thing to do is every 750-1000 to pull off your swim cap if you wear one, and scull a 50 as slowly as you can manage to go.
I swim in a community pool right across the street from my house. It’s typically around 80. Perfect for lap swimming most of the time. I could stand it a bit warmer on winter mornings.
Pool at my gym is always warmer than a swimmer’s pool. Occasionally it feels like im swimming in a hot tub, i dont know how hot the temp is but its unreal. Its miserable doing laps with a swm cap on, you can see the steam rolling off of your head/body as you stand up out of the water. Swimming without a cap is a must because these type of places arent going to cater to swimmers as we arent the ones complaining. Old ass people have nothing better to do than to complain and be miserable, count on the pool temps staying up.
I just called the Aquatic center where I used to swim and they keep it 79-81 degrees. I guess it wasn’t as big a difference as I had thought. It feels a lot warmer.
I can’t imagine swimming in water that is almost 90 degrees!! that must be fun in the summer.
Wow! I enjoy the heat, but that would cause me to melt. 78 degrees at my Y, and somedays that is still too warm for me. But that is just me. I wish the wetsuit cutoff was 72. If you cant use their pool, you might need to find a new one.
My college pool is usually 80*
Colby pool is like 82, I don’t know why they keep it so warm particularly because the swim team uses it but that’s about it - not really open to the community
of the two YMCAs I swim at when I am home, one is 82, other is 79
My pool caters to the masters and keeps the pool at a temp that is “conducive to competitive swimming”. It is usually at a temp that requires several laps before guys like me with no body fat start to warm up and feel comfortable. During longer rest intervals I get cold and need to keep moving.
I swim at an outdoor pool at my Y. It’s nice in the winter because it’s mostly just lap swimmers and they keep it about 82. Once spring gets here and they start back up with water aerobics and kids swimming, they let the weather dictate the temp, which means 86-90. I hate coming out of the shower and still sweating after swimming in the summer!!
