For a 14 year old cyclist is a lactate threshold power of 210 watts, and max watts 1053 respectible?
How big (heavy) is the cyclist? Male or female?
Joel
210w normalized power for 20, 30 or 60 minutes?
better yet, what is his W/kg?
173 pounds, and for 60 minutes, and male.
What protocol was used to measure these? Max for how long? There’s not a lot of power data out there for folks under 18. The Coggan tables are based on young adults.

max for 60 minutes
.
tough to say, has he been cycling long, or just start out?
Lance Armstrong was beating the pro field at age 16 in triathlon, so his numbers would have been much higher than the numbers you have posted
I am 18 years older, 8 pounds lighter and can generate over 100w more per hour than this kid
and I’m slow
just FYI
at 14, he should be focusing on fun, when he hits 16, if he is still in the sport and not off chasing girls, re-post the numbers

I meant the max figure - the one time max from a SRM/PowerTap/Computrainer?
For some reference figures, I am a mediocre cat 4 racer.
I weigh 71 kg, can do 235 watts for 60 minutes, and I’ve hit well over 1200 watts a couple of times on my PowerTap.
I agree. He should be trying as many sports as possible and try to figure out which few to focus on when he turns about 16 or so.
not sure for how long it was
.
He is asked if it is any good not what the kid should do with his life. Isn’t 173 punds pretty big for a 14 year old ? He is heavier than most pro cyclists already.
How are his pack skills? If he has had any sort of training for riding safely in a pack he would easily hang with the pack in a flat cat 4 crit where I live. Without knowing more data it’s hard to say. He would also do ok in a flat junior crit. Several of the 14 year old juniors in my club would drop him like they drop me on training rides in any race with a signficant climb.
the kid is six foot two and is not fat, his pack skills are good.
How has he done so far in triathlons and cycling? Just curious. What area of the country? With such early development of size, he could be doing really well, for a while, in a lot of sports.
BTW, I am not recommending that he be stuck in a cat 5 or cat 4 crit, just that is possible with those sort of numbers as he is pretty close to my capabilities.
Lives in chicago and has done ok in cycling and does a lot of other sports.
6’2" and 210w/CP60, 14, … a good start, keep it going!
And at 6’2" at 14, this kid should be playing ball
You may want to consider introducing him to track cycling.

He’ll probably be stronger than me when he’s 16.
The peak power figure is decent but the power to weight for 60 minute would be mediocre if he were 18. Since he’s not, I have no idea. The reason I say he would be probably be dropped in a hilly course is it takes about 5.5 watts/kg to stay with the 3’s or 4’s in race here with a hill over four minutes or so, and there are several 3’s around here that are 14. I’ve done a few crits with hills and to stay with the pack on one of the local courses, one has to do about 7 watts/kg for 45 seconds, recover as one can for 75 seconds and repeat. I could only do that four times but the race was twelve laps so I got dropped after four laps.
6’2" and 173lbs. Damn. How bout some basketball?!?
