How fast is fast?

I know there are many different variables when testing cycling speed. I for one would like to know the different terrain you ride on and ave speeds\headwind\variables that might afffect it. Solo rides and group ride averages are welcome, but please specify the type.I know i can average close to 21 for around 50-60 miles if i push it on my bike on rolling terrain. I have no “tri specific” bike or deep v rims, just a reg road bike that i put clip on aerobars sometimes. It is probably worth less than your wheelset or one wheel for that matter. Is this a respectable speed for training? What do you all go?

Don’t worry so much about speed. You want to train using Heart Rate, or even better Heart Rate combined with a power meter that measures Watts.

But since you asked, 21 mph does not seem bad for a MOP. In group rides, 23-25 mph for non-competitive ridding seems like the norm.

But it all depends on your fitness and goals. For some people, going 21mph could translate to 110 bpm HR while for someone else the same would cause a HR of 170 bpm.
