My 7 1/2 year old daughter has asked to “train” with me and race as a team against others. Thus came after seeing Team Hoyt videos. My question is how much can be too much for a young child. I understand that a 5k is too much. Want to start with a 1/4 mile jog and go from there. Any medical/factual information is greatly appreciated.

.
In elementary school we ran a timed mile in PE class. I think we started this in 3rd grade.
Our school cross country races at that time were 0.75 mile
I started running 10Ks with my Dad at age 9. Granted, that was in 1980 when no one knew anything. I could run, I could hang with him, so we did. We ran a ton of races together. Always had a blast.
And guess what? It started a lifetime of endurance sport for me.
So, yes, you can probably push too far too fast. But then again, if your daughter loves it and is naturally inclined, not really a problem, in my eyes, as long as you don’t get crazy.
