Just curious.
$399 + $1Billion in replacement parts that have rusted out over the past 4 Wisconsin winters
I had a buddy actually snap all the way through his rusted down tube on his way to work this year - we use a lot of salt on the roads. This means cheap bikes and parts.

I paid $1000 for it in 1989. At the time it was cutting edge mountain bike technology. It sat in my parents barn for the past 15 years and I resecued it about 6 months ago. I dropped a good $350 fixing it up, but now it’s SMOKIN’

Performance Scattante XRL Team frame: $280. DuraAce 9 speed circa 1999, everything else purchased from Performance with coupons. I built it myself in a few hours, cuz I needed a way to get to work the next day. It’s red, my favorite color, and the sentimental value is priceless.
It’s been through a lot. Snow, rain, one of the worst T-storms in my lifetime, hit by a car, my first crit, my first low-speed crash in years (a whole other embarassing story), Evanston potholes, flooded Des Plaines River, it’s seen it all. I still favor it over my P3C cuz it’s a freakin’ hammer.
1980 St. Tropez that I got from my lbs for free, I put cx tires on it and I am set. I commute 1 mile so it does the job and cost me only $20 for the tires, but ill ride it with a rusted chain until it falls off and the derailluers sieze up, then ill convert it to a fixie.
hm. ~ $150
Raleigh Rapide that I picked up for $75 then stripped down and converted to fixie. New saddle and wheels cost me a bit but were partially offset by selling off the oldschool parts
No idea what it costs as I have built it up with used parts from other builds.

During the winter (and salt), the old crusty mountain bike is worth about twenty bucks. During the other seasons, a Trek Madone 5.2, about three grand when I bought it.
$350 2008 Fuji Track Bike
.
Free. My neighbor had it sitting around and gave it to me when I made some shifting adjustments to his mountain bike.
Its a 1990 Trek 1000 with Suntour 7 speed downtube shifting and bio-pace cranks. I added some fenders and is a dream to commute on.
$599 2009 Cannondale Quick 4

same price as my race bikes… i have no dedicated commuter and use my mtb, and tri bikes (but without the sexy race stuff like wheels, cassettes and chains etc)
$500 Bianchi Pista + pedals
.
I just sold my commuting winter and mtb bikes.
Yesterdays commute was on the road bike, which I suspect would cost about £1k to replace.
£200. '94 Kona Lava Dome with mtn1 rack and agu waterproof panniers, oh and an air zound horn for blind/stupid drivers!
