How does one get bike insurance?

I want to buy bike insurance that will cover crashes, it being stolen (live in NYC), damaged in flight, etc. Are there any good companies for that? Approximately how much is it per year (assuming I went $10k of coverage).

I was told simply to itemize them on householders / renters.

This would cover my watches and my bikes specifically and everything else generally.

Andrew is mostly correct in that it would be covered under you homeowners policy, however there are usually limits as to how much they will pay for an individual item. In most cases it is $2500. I would check with your insurance company to find out if you can do a specific rider to your policy that would cover a particular item (much like individuals would do with jewelry). I don’t think any renters policy would cover any item as expensive as your bike. Who knows in NY though:)

I had a renter’s policy (“homeowners policy” for when you don’t own the home) that paid for repair to my steel road bike after I drove under a parking garage with it on the roof rack. A deductible of $500 applied, but I got a check for the other $1,300. All they asked for was an itemized bill from the repair shop and a quote on total replacement. The repair was cheaper than replacement, so they paid it.

The bike was covered as “household goods damaged in transport”.
