How Does Kona Lottery Validation Work?

If you win a lottery spot for Kona, what is the time frame you have for the 1/2 iron. If you did the US half champs at the end of september the year before would that not be valid because it is a couple weeks more than one year before Kona? Is it required that you complete one AFTER the lottery takes place?

14. How do I validate my lottery slot?

If you win a lottery slot you must provide proof of completion of any ½ distance or greater (1.2 mi. swim, 56 mi. bike, 13.1 run) event. Validation must be received within 15 days of event completion. Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of the slot.

Not valid since you would be way past the 15 day post-race requirement to submit your form.

I saw that but then on the active.com registration page it says

“Athletes who are SELECTED in the lottery must have completed a LONG distance (1/2 Ironman distance or greater) event within one year previous to the 2005 Ironman World Championship to validate his/her lottery slot. Lottery winners should plan on completing the validating race before August 31, 2005, and all validations should be in the Kona Office prior to August 31, 2005.”

If the lottery is not until April 15 and you have to do it by 7/31 (to get it to them by 8/31), in what sense do you have 1-year? You really just have 4/1-7/31, yes?

I’d email them and ask them to clarify since the two don’t jive.

"Athletes who are SELECTED in the lottery must have completed a LONG distance (1/2 Ironman distance or greater) event within one year previous to the 2005 Ironman World Championship

Look closely…within **one year previous to the 2005 Ironman World Championship…**not the lottery selection date. Therefore, IMH on October 15 2005…your race September of 2004. Too early

Better get your butt signed up for a Half IM!

That still doesn’t jive with this: Validation must be received within 15 days of event completion.

So say you do the Taupo Half IM in December 2004. OK, that is within one year previous to the 2005 Ironman World Championship…yes?

But the lottery isn’t until April 2005. Your 15 days after event completion are up by December 31, 2004.

So they really need to change it to say that you have to do a HIM between April 15 and August 31, 2005.

But not really since, this doesn’t jive either:

Lottery winners should plan on completing the validating race before August 31, 2005, and all validations should be in the Kona Office prior to August 31, 2005."

So, you really need to race by mid-August in order to get the validation to Hawaii in time (I’m assuming to the Kona race office).

Obviously the WTC needs to hire a risk manager.

clm, risk management is my game

With the way it’s written couldn’t you do a qualifying race some time November through mid April and send in validation within 15 days just in case your name gets drawn?

Prevalidating the spot is good risk management

Hmmm…didn’t think of the 15 day thing…so did you submit your application to the WTC yet?

I won a lottery slot, I did IMFLA 2004, they validated my slot.

I’m still going to do a 1/2 Aug 6th and submit that too…WTH!!
