Seen as though its cold and wet here (OK I live in the UK, so its always cold and wet!), i’m getting back on the turbo.
The question is how do you set up the turbo to give a realistic and consistant ride, the idea being that I can try and use my road speeds etc to see if im making progress.
Unless you have a power meter or CompuTrainer I’m not sure how you would measure fitness progress on a turbo trainer other than to track how long you are able to hold certain heart rates with certain rest periods. Speed would not be a good measure because too many factors play into the actual resistance on the tire.
I really don’t think that you can use speed as any type of measurement indoors, you have to go by HR or better yet Power.
At the very least pick up a cheap HRM if you don’t already have one.
Lactate Test gives you a realistic idea of your performance at a moment … I like to think it’s like a picture of your performance profile.
You may use a home trainer equiped with powermeter, and with a correct protocole establish your treshold profile. Then with the tests, you can see your perfomance evolution.
