I am doing a race where you swim 300 yards, run 1 mile, then repeat two more times.
I have a 920xt.
Do I just record it all as one running activity or is there a way to get the data as three separate swims and three separate runs using some sort of lap feature?
At the end of the day I probably do not even need to record at all but I thought I would ask.
On my 735xt you can create a new Activity Profile, where you can create a custom Multi-sport activity. BUT, there is a limit of 5 activities I think, so you could set something up like Run - Swim - Run - Swim - Run, but that would be the limit. Not sure if the # of activities allowed is more on new Garmins, or other sport watches.

I have a 920xt. Works the same. I have a Run-Swim-Run profile as I do that for a workout sometimes.
The Garmin docs don’t mention a limit. I’ve never tried 5 or more.

I’ve done both. I used the multi sport profile and set it up for s/r/s/r…in training but on race day at Casco bay, I left it in run mode as I wanted to be able to look at the entire profile
N+1 Theory applies to electronics as well as bikes, and this situation clearly calls for you buy a new watch. Wear the old 920XT on left wrist for recording run, new watch on right wrist for recording swim. BAM!
Awe man, I was thinking your suggestion would be useful for SoS, and I guess it still is, just all my transitions will be swims. (Bike to be recorded on a separate device anyway.)
Oh, and to Eric, leaving watch at home is not an option!
I was using a Samsung Galaxy Bluetooth 46 mm watch, which was linked to Galaxy Health on my cell phone, which forwarded the information to Strava. I did this for my swims, runs, and bike rides. I was satisfied with the watch until it went into an infinite reboot loop while I was swimming laps at my local YMCA. Samsung initially told me the watch was still under warranty and to send it in for repair. Samsung then determined that the damage was due to water, which was not covered under the warranty. Can you imagine that?!!! They sell a sports watch with a swim mode, but the warranty doesn’t cover damage due to water! Samsung wanted $430 to cover the repair of the watch, which was substantially more than the original purchase price. I am now in the market for a sports watch from any manufacturer other than Samsung.
On my Garmin Forerunner 735XT I create a multisport profile called SwimRun, add open water swimming as profile 1, trail running as profile 2, set it to repeat on and transition off, that’s all.

Sue - that’s what I ended up doing for SOS Cape Cod - watch would ONLY allow 5 activities, so I then used the “transitions” for my run splits.
It’s less than ideal, but it did work.
I think I’ll switch that now to have the Swims be “transition”, since I really don’t care what my pace is whilst doing them - don’t even really look at the watch at all.
(which will require me using the 520 on the bike to record the bike split, and then start the watch with hopping off the bike at the Awosting lot - what a PITA.)
What pisses me off BIGLY, is that my old 310XT had ZERO issues being set up for EIGHT separate splits.
It was a piece of cake to program it to do this, whereas my spendy fenix 5+ makes it impossible.
Grape Job, Garmin! Way to fix something that wasn’t broken.
Sigh.
