How do you know if a bike frame is fake?

There is a “custom” bike on ebay I am interested in, but I was curious how I would know if it was a fake frame? Should I ask the seller for the serial number and contact the manufacturer? Is there another way to tell

That is what I would do. If they don’t have the serial number record, than it’s a fake. What is “custom” about this bike?

It claims to be a 2011 Caad10 and it’s red. They didn’t come in red so does that mean it’s fake or do they sometimes come out with custom colors?

Contact the manufacturer. The bike may have been painted which could void it’s warranty. Most custom colors are for professional athletes

I Think I’m just gonna forget about it. Price seems awfully low too. If it sounds too good to be true, it prob is. Thanks though. Good info about the custom colors.

Why would anyone fake a Caad10? Post a link so we can see it.

.

Fake no, stolen…possibly, but unusual to post the frame no in the ad.
May well be legit sale, some people who grab a bike for a discount price and find they don’t use it at all see little to no value in them and let them go for a song…
You rarely see distributors and EN stickers on resprays… Repaired bike maybe… But less so in aluminium as heat treated Alu is a prick to repair and generally not economicL in regards to to bike frame… Ie new frame 750 bucks etc.

Probably a 2012 version. That’s not custom paint.

Also the price isn’t “too low,” that’s just the starting bid. It’ll be higher than that by the time it sells.

Edit: That colorway was on stock in 2011.

Not sure your assertion about the Cannondale is correct? Looking at the 2011 Cannondale US Catalog and I see a red Caad10 spec’d wiht Shimano 105 on page 57:

It sure is sexy looking

I have never heard of a knock off 'aluminum’ frame. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever come across an advertised ‘Cannondale’ branded knock off either, whether it be aluminum or carbon.

I’d think you’re safe to think that this is a genuine frame.

I’ve seen listings on craigslist where people took cheap bikes and put cannondale logos on them. If you knew what to look for it was pretty obvious.

I’ve seen that frame before. A guy bought the frameset and built it up with his own groupset.

Keep in mind that the reserve price has not even been met yet. For all you know it could be $1000. Everything looks legit to me.

Might not even be a custom color. Manufacturers sometimes do small runs of frames to meet unexpected demands near the end of the year, and they will occasionally get painted in colors different than the “main” run of that size/model for various reasons. Nothing on that ebay listing looks “fake” to me.

The frame looks legit and the pricing is kinda not very cheap too IMO.

When it’s a recumbent.

I have a red CAAD 10, mine is definitely not a fake, I bought it a local shop and I have seen a few others out on the road, like another poster already mentioned Cannondale did make red ones a couple years back.
