Nothing motivates me through the winter like signing up for an early season race. It might help to open up excel and plan out an 06 season. That will give you something to train towards…
I injured my knees last December. Long story short… got Runner’s Knee because of flat feet problem, spent some time at the chiro doing physical therapy and getting insoles. It took time but I am all better now.
I started to train again but motivation was initially hard. This is probably old news but it did work for me: Watch some race videos, spend some time here on ST read race reports, look online for race pics, and know that next season is coming up so it’s time to do some nice slow base training now in the winter.
It was hard for me to start, but once you get over that initial hump, you will find your motivation back. Go slow, set a goal, meet it, set another one.
Do you want to get remotivated?
Put your name on an entry blank or at least rally yourself around some event. To me, there is nothing more motivating than that.
buy and read “the perfect mile.” it’s one of the very few things that kept me training and racing this summer during some very dark days.

Renee, I agree. The only way I can keep up the focus is to have lots of races I sign up for. These are my rewards for all the hard work in training.

Buy some new piece of equipment. The guilt will make you use it. And before you know it, you’re back in the swing of things again.

Do you want to get remotivated?
That’s the important question.
Get and watch a copy of the 1989 Ironman “War of the Gods”.
When you can’t see your feet when you bend over, then that’s how you can get motivated.
I just came off about a 6 month period during which my workouts were half ass, at best (it was during the period of time me and my family relocated to Colorado from Michigan). I tried signing up for races, but I ended up just skipping them. I did one sprint last summer. One. I’m back now, though, training six days a week for a winter marathon (5 days running; one day bike/swim). I have no motivation problems at all. Here’s my take on it: First, my life has to be fairly settled for me to commit to a serious workout schedule. Until my life is somewhat in equilibrium, I don’t have the mental focus to train well. Second, I took it very easy getting back into it. And I mean easy. I scheduled low key workouts for about 5 days/week. For instance, run 25 minutes today and if you need to walk, that’s okay. Ride the trainer for 45 minutes on the small ring – sweat, but don’t worry about how low your heart rate might be. I did that for about 6 weeks; by then, I had momentum and I was ready to take it up a notch.
Good luck getting back into it.
I was sidelined by a sprain and low motivation.
Got my ass spanked in a sprint last weekend.
So I’m back to serious training because I hate getting my ass spanked by girls in my AG.
Getting spanked by a guy is another story though…
All I have to do is hop into a race that I’m not ready for and get smoked by someone that I usually beat. Last winter I had a few injuries and didn’t get to train as much as usual. I also was having a “no big race” year after 2 straight years of crazy IM training to get me to Hawaii. I raced a small early-season sprint tri and got caught on the run (it was 7.5k and I ran the first 5k slower than my first 5k at Kona last year so I was not moving very fast!). The guy who caught me said afterwards that after I passed him early came up to me after the race and said that by the speed that I went by him, he knew that I’d fade and he’d come back to me … I was hoping to race him again later in the season when I’d dropped 10 lbs. but he wasn’t at any of the other races I did … this motivates me.
Also, I am good and motivated after following an exciting race like last week’s IM. Man I wish I had been there this year. It’s got me working on plans to race Muskoka and get a LP slot for next summer.
Allan, the tought of letting posers drop you at Epicman should be enough motivation:
Bring it on “epicman-muskoka-tupperlake-peterborugh-IMLP2006” :-).
I’ll be ready :).
absolutely agree, had something similar happen to me last winter…
long break (~ 6months) due to work and other commitments and generally being a bit ‘fed up’, then eased back into training early this year, started racing and surprise, it went real well, and ended season with Iron distance race two weeks ago…
good luck getting back into training…
it will all come back, I am sure…
Thanks for posting this . . . I’ve had no motivation since completing IMC. I’ve been on my bike once since and run 4 times - this is starting to feel like confession - anyway, I have no idea how to get going again. I’ve volunteered to lead a local run clinic that starts next week so I’m hoping the pressure of having people waiting for me will force me to go outside and run.

How about that there will be women who write posts like this at the next race? Jeez how did you guys let that alone for so many posts?
Seriously, I find that if I force my way though a week or two, even crappy short runs, I get into the habit and rythymn of training. Good videos and music help, though training partners are the best aid you can find. My training partner is on the east coast and will swim 100 miles over the next 3 months (less actually) plus regular training. Thats my motivation right now, he’s already faster in the water.
