How do I train my "gameface"?

I have had an email through from the organiser of Timberman 70.3 and it says its almost time for me to start getting my “gameface” on.

Such a phrase is rarely if ever used in Colchester, England, and I find myself unsure as to what exactly I have to do.

What is a “gameface”? Is it like an O face? Does it hurt? How long must I wear it? Are there any training techniques I can do while I come to the end of my 3 month taper? Or is it something that I cut out of a magazine and wear, with a piece of elastic? If so, is there a carbon version?

Also, while I am on here, can anyone tell me whether 4 swims in the last 12 months (2 of which were in a comedy hotel pool in Singapore) is going to be put me at any kind of disadvantage come race day.

I am looking fwd to getting me some of that famous NH hospitality. Anyone fancy a cup of tea in T2?

1.get a long thin piece of wood or a spoon or something

2.go sit at a table

  1. start smiling

  2. start hitting yrself on the hand with the small piece of wood/spoon/etc, but keep smiling (don’t let anybody see your in pain)

when you’ve done this for a couple of days, you can go to the next level and start practicing saying "hello’ & “thank you” to the volunteers on raceday with yr gameface on, while hitting yrself.

I’m the RD, and my inlaws are both British, with strong accents, despite living in Houston, TX for 25 yrs. My mother in law will be heading up the food tent (sorry, no tea and crumpets)…My wife was born in England, and just became an American citizen 7 years ago.

So, you’ll fit right in:)

I am loooking forward to coming over to an almost embarrassingly large degree. I haven’t been so excited about impending physical activity since my mother-in-law bent over to do some weeding and I happened to have a plank of wood in my hand.

Shouldn’t you be asleep?

RD’s don’t sleep with less than 3 weeks to go till raceday:)

BTW, I love my in-laws…

when your competition thinks you are suffering, show them “cold blue steel” and THEY will be the ones doing the suffering!!!

Ah, I see. It looks pretty aero, which I am led to understand is a good thing for such an event. Would narrowing the eyes a bit - Clint Eastwood style - help?

Yes a squint would be powerful, and the hands must be held in either a faux judo-chop position, or they must both be pointing index fingers directly at whoever the gameface is directed towards.

Well if you hail from Colchester, I’m sure you know how to keep a stiff upper lip. No need to train, that’s your gameface right there.

As for the swims–of course that’s not a disadvantage. It’s just that your taper was 12 months, not 3. Think of all the energy you’ve stored up–every cell of every muscle just brimming with glycogen!

Interesting. Tell me, does spare glycogen tend to accumulate in a ring around one’s middle? If so, someone is going to have to put one of those arresting wire contraptions on the road next to T2 (like they have on an aircraft carrier) to stop me, otherwise I could end up in Tijuana

From the UK, and need to work on your “game face”?

Pretend you’re Jimmy Nail ( thin version )

How about this:

Only without the feathers. And the beak. And the weird freaky ears?
