Washington (CNN)A white Republican congressman said Tuesday that he isn’t offended by President Donald Trump’s racist attacks on four Democratic congresswomen of color because he’s “a person of color.”
“You know, they talk about people of color. I’m a person of color. I’m white. I’m an Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don’t get offended,” Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania told Vice News.

On a side note, I also don’t get offended that there is an NBA basketball team in Boston that not only mispronounces my ethnicity, but has reduced its proud history of symbolism to an imaginary character. Or the College sports program that perpetuates the stereotype that we’re a violent ethnicity that resorts to brawls.

I remember growing up and taking the standardized tests in elementary school. For the Demographics the asked Color, not Race 1970’s. I was always given the choice of white, and that’s the circle I darkened with my #2 pencil. Are both I and the creators of the test idiots?

I challenge you to go to some of the poor towns of West Virginia and tell people about their White Privilege.
No argument there if you just leave it at economic privilege. Black and white working class poor both missed out on that in the mill and mine towns of Appalachia. About the Mr Kelly though and NW Pa. The man is a 1970 graduate of Notre Dame who takes his Irish ancestry just a little too proudly. His pa district 16 is blue collar. His old man ran a car dealership, he worked there and then bought the old man out. This man has experienced white privilege in spades. At his current age, 71, he qualifies for retirement from politics.
Personally I find it very interesting that Irish (my lineage), Italian, Polish (also my lineage), etc. all get lumped in as generically “white” even though in the early 1900s many of those ethnicities were confined to ghettos in cities like New York, Chicago, etc. Any injustices those groups may have faced in the past, any cultural pride they might have, and any stereotypes they might face now just get washed away because they are generically considered “white”. This even extends to the census:
I was very tempted to write in “Irish/Polish” rather than checking the box for “white”. Maybe next time around I will.

just an observation: as smart as you are, and tho you realize that what this guy said betrays a breathtaking lack of judgment and value-grounding, you can reliably, like clockwork, be counted on to tweeze out some kind of defense of the indefensible. if you are not a defendant’s attorney you missed your calling!

You have my condolences. I am curious as to what his district is like?
The only real city is Erie, PA (which is a stretch) and the rest is very rural. The two main past times are hunting and drinking beer, probably in that order. Erie will typically elect a Dem but has had a few Reps in the past. However, the population of Erie can’t determine a congressional election.
The area is very industrial, about 25% of the jobs. A lot of jobs left when the auto industry tanked in 2000 and shops that had 1000 people became shops of 100. Shops of 100 became 5 to 10 man shops and wages were cut dramatically. Another large part of the area was built on supporting the coal mining industry and that has since gone away, obviously. The people in this area pretend to be religious and they are very bitter.
One of the reasons for the low quality is because of our low voting rates. This causes a low incentive to appeal to a wide range of voters, it is much easier to energize a small section that you get to vote for you. If more people voted, candidates would have to appeal to more people and a wider variety of people.
Another factor is gerrymandering. That way you only need to win your primary.

He IS a defendant’s attorney. Of course, he’s not wrong here, but he IS deflecting the actual point. The congressman IS a “protected class” because we all are a protected class. He is NOT a “person of color” as that term is understood.

Actually, he and you are ‘factually wrong’. He is not technically ‘white’. He is some color we generally call white but on an actual color palette it is not. If you painted your house the color of his skin, no one would consider it a white house.
Very few people have skin color that is actually white or black. We just use those words to describe each other.

Are you suggesting that the plight and poverty of the rural white working poor is real? Are you further suggesting that they perceive it as real? Are you further further suggesting that telling that group of people that they are privileged could cause them to be offended by such a statement? That’s what I’m reading here.
Sure sounds similar to this other group I’ve heard about. Minority, history of slavery and unimaginable and violent discrimination until a few decades ago. Still behind economically as a group and even today incarcerated in disproportionate numbers, serving longer sentences for comparable crimes, getting shot by law enforcement in disproportionate numbers… based on what you seem to understand about the white working poor…how do you think this other group feels about “all lives matter” or the majority’s dismissive stance towards complaints of institutional racism? “Just shut up and dribble”

We’re normalizing the foolishness though, that’s the problem.
Also, even in traditional “races of color”, there is a bias towards favoring lighter skinned people. In that shade, he’s basically trying to include himself as “johnny come lately” through a poorly contrived argument. Lots of the identity of “races of color” doesn’t lie in the color itself, but in the shared experiences. If he grew up in a mixed environment and that’s what he knows, fine. He’s in that group too. But I’m guessing in this instance that’s a big NO, he didn’t grow up that way.
