How can one Qualify for Kona?

Does anyone know how to qualify for Kona? I hope to qualify for the 2006 Kona. Hopefully, I give myself enough time to prepare. I am in Southern CA and would like to know what time I would need and at what race. Help.

Qualifying isn’t easy, and depends on your age group. First, you have to get into a qualifying race, most other IMs and a couple 1/2 IMs are qualifiers. The IMs have more ‘slots’ allotted to them, but more people also. For men 30-34 this means that there are between 10 and 15 slots at a full IM (M dot) race, but only 1 or 2 at a 1/2.

So, you have to finish really well in a qualifier to get a slot, top 10 in an IM, or top 3 in a 1/2. The times needed vary on race and conditions, but you are looking at pretty much sub 10 for an IM nowadays.

Correction Mr. Tibbs:

Swim, bike, run really really really fast. Repeat as often as you like (or care to, or can whichever may apply).
