How can I avoid chapped lips on long training/race days?

Did a 100mi ride on Saturday in prep for IMAZ and I encountered a problem that I’ve never faced before - chapped lips. I’ve always been careful to slather on sunscreen to my head/face/neck etc, but have never really given much thought to my lips. I’m sure that a normal tube of chapstick will melt in AZ, and I don’t want to put regular suncreen on them. Any suggestions?

Drink more water…and I have never seen a chapstick melt…but I live in Northern Canada also!

See if you can find this. It’s available only at Rite-Aid in my area.

Regular chapstick melts, but the medicated or the moisturizer ones hold up in my hot car in 105+ in August. The one in the blue or light blue tube, they are made by “Chapstick” still. After switching to these, the regular chapstick doesn’t do anything for me anymore.

I put a little carmex from the container on my stem and just rub it from the stem on to my lips every so often…keeps me from having to dig for a container or carry anything else on those long training rides. Only bad thing is if its really windy and you happen to hit some dust!

Cocoa Butter chapstick stays on extremely well, it works like a champ for me.

Use this one. Chapstick Ultra 30. Does not melt. Stays on a very long time. In fact, I have a second stick that I have used for cold weather running in the sun, on my nose and cheeks to prevent sunburn and windburn.

No it won’t. I stick a tube in my DeSoto Power shorts pocket on the leg where it’s easily reached.

Most important thing in my opinion is to not use a chapstick that has any petroleum in it.

This is the best stuff I’ve found, it has sunscreen in it and lasts well for 6+ hour long rides…

I heard that if you ride with Kenny Souza he’ll occasionally offer you the chapstick…

I think we all know what Chopper would say here.

Oh No!?! Do your little lippys hurt some poor girl, you need a little chapstick or lip balm honey pie? I’ve got a great idea for you sweetie. Why don’t you just take this portion controlled serving of USDA HTFU!!! Let us know how that works.

But really, what do I think, ok…Chapped lips are a physiological response to specific stress such as sore legs from demanding VO2 max intervals. Maybe slightly related to conditions and nutrition. They do not however, just happen. i.e. they are in your control. When they heal, you have improved.

Train it, own it, forget it.

The best product for treating and preventing chapped lips (or any irritated skin) is Lasinoh pure lanolin (aka nipple cream- sold to nursing mothers) provided you are not allergic to wool (b/c lanolin is oil from wool). The cream is thick so it sticks around for a while, colorless when applied. You can find it in the “baby stuff” aisle of your everything store (like Walmart). I use this cream on every stretch of irritated skin whether it be chapped lips, light sunburn, or chaffing and it heals practically overnight.

Same thing I tell my troops when they ask this on winterwarefare training…Just keep licking them…

For serious, i think everyone else has covered it. Just drink lots.
