I have to admit that my conclusions about his bad swim technique came only from watching him swim. One should never conclude anything from observation….![]()
Keep in mind you’re almost certainly biased in that you’ve probably paid a lot more attention to Lionel’s stroke than almost any other triathlete’s stroke.
Almost no pro triathlete will ‘look good’ compared to elite pure swimmers also whom are racing shorter distances in a pool, I suspect that’s what your comparing him to rather than the likes of his triathlon compatriots who don’t share video as readily.
Heck, even in Luca’s Kona win, her stroke so so chopped that the pro commentators noted it outright that she was opting for a ‘really early pull’ rather than leaving the lead hand in front. Obviously it works for her, but it really looked more like a beginner-intermediate timing than elite swim timing, so there’s more than one way to do it.
“Dead hangs from a pull-up bar.”
Me too.
Also, I did/still do traction stretches with cords or straps. Focusing on stretching traps and neck muscles made mine impingement dissipate within a week, or couple days when it returns.
Not sure who Luca is….Lucy Charles-Barclay maybe?
Lucy sorry typo
So the Lucy that you are referring to is the World 1500m AG record holder, swims two minutes faster than Lionel for the 1500, has a turnover of nearly 90 spm and was the British Open water Champion at some point (and should have gone to the Olympics), she’s been a star swimmer since she was 9. And a high performance outlier (90 strokes pm….). I wouldn’t take a whole lot of notice of a commentator about her choppy style.![]()
It’s pretty freaking choppy you should watch it. They weren’t just over analyzing itni saw it and it looked like the opposite of what they teach you with keeping the lead arm out front. Again shows there’s more to an one way to do it.
I love that type of stroke. Im an arm out front person and ive tried the quicker early pull through but grr it just doesnt feel as good to me to doing a long glide. I can do faster turn over in open water if needed.
I am not sure exactly when the glide stroke became the standard for nice swimming, perhaps after thorpe / havkett and larsen jensen and then sun yang.
But there are still swimmers who do the chopping, and the glide, and then the inbetween (ledecky) that all swim super fast
There’s a lot of swimmers who race 10k open water not just shorter distances in the pool.
But Lionel’s stroke is pretty bad even for a triathlete (age group or professional).
How long does it take for shoulder pain to heal? My right shoulder pain felt gone last week, but it came back this week even though I only swam for two days.
About 42
Stop trolling
How do most swimmers never have issues with shoulder pain?
Haven’t heard you whining about the bike yet, you must put down some impressive splits
i dunno dude, maybe you suck so much at swimming that your terrible form just leads to injuries
Good lord man, you whine more than my 9 year old.
Find a coach to analyze your stroke. Maybe you’re doing something wrong when you’re swimming.
Find a PT to assess your injury and give you proper guidance. We are kind of shooting in the dark here with suggestions.
Most swimmers do struggle with on and off again shoulder issues. It’s a repetitive strain prone sport. Imagine complaining about runners and IT bands or something.
