I see these wheels on EBay all the time ranging from $500 up to $1000 with lots of buy it now options for new wheels. I have never seen any comments on the wheels on ST. I was at a race last weekend and saw a few people riding them. They look pretty cool and appear reasonably aero with a 45mm depth instead of a 50-60 range. Are they more popular on road bikes?
Slightly more aero than a falling cinderblock…not quite as aero as a Zipp.
As a general rule, the deeper the dish the more aero but you also have to take into account spoke count/shape and the shape of the dish. Wheels like the old Campy Shamals tested quite good for a medium dish wheel. I read somewhere that there is a claim of a greater % gain in going from a 27mm to a 40mm rim than there is going from a 40m to 60mm.
I just picked up a used set of Real Design Supersonic 40mm wheels quite cheap. Not sure what I’ll do with them. Probably get a custom disc cover for the rear and keep the front as a windy day race wheel.
