How About Some Canadian Politics - It's Budget Day!

Here we go again. Six weeks later and Stephen Harper and the Conservitives now seem to realize that their is some serious economic issues to deal with. Strange how a month and a half ago it was status quo and hold the course. “Recession? What Recession” seemed to be the attitude back in December - now they have changed their tune.

I’m a fan of Stephen Harper, but I have to admit he and the party was lacking leadership on this issue back in the late fall/early winter. That being said, though, I do not think the solution to that is a coalition governement or another election. Hopefully, it was a slap in the face and they will get their act together now.

No problemo! We’ll send you a dose of “Hope” Change" “Believe” and that will fix all that is wrong with our friends up North.

Hopefully, it was a slap in the face and they will get their act together now.

It’s remarkable to me that the Prime Minister had to be driven to such lengths, dealt with such threats(the coalition) and brought the government to the brink of defeat and then had to invoke a precedent setting prorogation of the House Of Commons, just to get it! He’s a smart man, but this was something else. Did he honestly think that they could just ignore the financial calamities going on elsewhere in the world, and it not impact Canada? Extraordinary behaviour, to say the least.

I don’t see any issue with a leader of a country trying to say that things are better than they are and not create a panic in the populace. What happens when a politician utters the words “recession”? Everyone stops buying anything and what does that lead to? Depression and/or much much worse. He could have handled it a little better but I would rather have him not admit there were issues than having him say something and get everyone freaked out.
And think about it…what MAJOR buying holiday happens in December? Could it not be that he wanted Canadians to get out and support the economy during that time to see if we couldn’t dig ourselves out of it?

I don’t think it was all that bad. They were already working on the budget which was planned for January. I don’t agree that they needed to rush through some kind of stimulus package like they did in the US. I have no problem with them taking their time and planning it out (hopefully, they’ve done that now).

However, Harper was pretty much nonexistent during that time period. He and his ministers should have been out giving interviews and talking up the budget to calm people’s fears. He also should have been talking to the opposition parties to get their input on what the budget should contain. This is a time when they parties should be working together, not behind closed doors plotting each other’s demise.

Mark,

I agree with you. The key thing is the wording and how you talk about it. Just be frank and honest. But to to nothing, and say nothing, is not the right approach. As I said, it’s fascinating to see how much the Conservitives have changed their tune in 6 short weeks!

The problem is so many Canadians use U.S. based media for their daily news, so they are getting all the horror stories south of the boarder. You can’t control that. They already believe that we are in a recession, because their news sources are telling them that they are.

I agee that their is a psychlogical component to a reccession - many people who are well off and who are not impacted at all in any way reflexively pull back. We have even done this in our house-hold and both my wife and I have seen our bsinesses set record growth in the last year. Nevertheless - we have changed a few things and reigned in a few expenses.

Well, Chantel and I are doing our part to stimulate the economy. Our wedding is out of control.

I have heard that the wedding planning business is recession proof. Why? because most people toss common-sense and rational thought right out the window and get swept up in the whole wedding machine.

Congratulations and best wishes.

It’s funny though. The vast majority of the money is going to a private golf course that my dad belongs to. So really nobody in the public is making too much off of us. And yes, I was dragged to a bridal show. Women are nuts!!!

“I was dragged to a bridal show. Women are nuts!!!”

I have a part time wedding photography hobby business which I plan to expand with my son doing wedding videos. Quite lucrative for a days work. As far as wedding photographers are concerned, it’s only about two people - the bride and her mother. The guys are just props.

Women are nuts!!!

Some of the most profitable work that MissP does is the up-dos at weddings for the bridal party and the Mothers. She makes an amazing amount of money for such a short period of work.

Screws up the training and racing though as she has to work a lot of Saturdays in the spring and summer!

i was originally in charge of finding a photographer, until I lost it on a couple of them. I wanted them to justify their $1500-$3000 packaged they were offering. It was ridiculous the excuses I was getting as to why they felt they were worth that much. I finally had to give the job to the fiancée and she found someone through a friend of a friend of a friend who is just starting out in the business. Young and eager and full of life. And she is pretty inexpensive.
Nothing against you but some of these dudes are clueless. Or consumers are…I haven’t decided which.

Wedding photography is way over priced, but people are willing to spend for it. So what can I say.

Some people are willing. But you are correct. If they weren’t able to get that much, they wouldn’t be asking for it.

Wait, did Canada import politicians from the US when I wasn’t looking? Good lord they’re the same all over the globe aren’t they? “What?! Nothing to see here, no problems at all. Completely under control…Holy CRAP! we are in a CRISIS spend, raise taxes, WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!”

yes, let’s get people to max out their credit cards around Christmas, so when they get laid off in February/March they’ll be doubly screwed, but then they would have ‘supported the economy’

That isn’t what I said at all. Buying stuff on credit is never the correct plan of action no matter what the economy is doing. How did you get that from what I said?

do you really think the vast majority of people saved money all year to buy stuff for Christmas cash on hand? What world are you living in? the vast majority of people (look at our savings rate!) buys on credit, and I am not sure how you can ‘dig yourself out’ of a crisis by spending money you don’t have (or money you do have but that you ought to be saving in case you get laid off).

How did you get that from what I said?

Mark,

Perhaps it was assumed. It does not take much to figure out that this is what a lot of people do.
