Houston : Stop at the airport and looks for info's

Hello folks,

Tomorrow will start my stress. I travel to Europe (Brussels).
Usually, I have a stop to Newark. But this time, I have 2 : the first one in Houston.
A place that I don’t know, a place where I must spend the night. I arrive at 6 pm, and my flight is for the next day (friday) at 10 am.
That stresses me out a little.

Just to be sure to find cheap transportation from the airport to the city. What do you recomend ?
Any place to stay with free internet access ? (wireless)
Do you know a cheap hotel that you may recomend ?

Any help highly appreciated !!!

I don’t think you would need to go into the city, there are quite a few hotels right next to the airport from what I’ve seen. Not sure about prices but they seemed to have all the standard hotel brands.

I haven’t been through Houston in years, but I promise you that there will be either a Hampton Inn or a Holiday Inn Express (probably both) with a shuttle to and from the airport. They will be clean, have a decent free breakfast, and free wifi.

Which airport, Hobby or Intercontinental?

Inter has a Marriott inside it i believe, not sure how cheap, but if you add in transportation and hassle factor it may make sense.

If its Hobby let me know I can contact my brother who lives near there.

If an overnight stop over in Houston scares you - are you sure you want to go to Europe?

The Marriott at Bush is fine and right on the airport grounds. Good enough pub/lounge on the top floor. I think it was about $150USD for a large room, but that was 16mo ago, you should be able to get a better deal than that now. I wouldn’t bother going into town, but you could also look for Holiday Inn or similar just off the airport grounds if you want to try and save $ at the expense of hassle.

There is no such thing as cheap ground transportation in Houston. Houston is a city built by oil people for car people. We shun all forms of public transport.

It’s also the city of chain restaurants, almost all of which feature some form of outlet in Intercontinental airport itself.

Save yourself the hassle and stay close to IAH. Did I mention you shouldn’t leave the hotel at night?

Of course we have metro busses which are cheap and a train system which is small but expanding which is also cheap…

True. But I don’t think either of those fine modes of transport will be of much use if you’re at the airport.

By the way, I’ve investigating using the Park and Ride/Metro thing to get me from home to work and its $11.50 per day. Ouch.
