Houston Roads Suck

I’ve been living in Houston for about one month now.
In the last two weeks I have popped three tires.
It is my opinion that Houston has the most poorly maintained streets I have ever ridden on.
Anyone else in Houston care to comment?

Where are you riding?

My perspective:

Lived in Houston for three years (2007-2010) and rode 7,000 miles a year and only four (4) flats in all that time. Standard 700 x 23 Clinchers and Mid-weight tubes.
Lived in Phoenix for nine years (1998-2007). At least one flat EVERY SINGLE WEEK, sometimes three flats in one ride.
Lived in San Jose’, Costa Rica for one year (2010-2011) and suddenly remembering Houston and Texas chip seal seemed like a dream.

So, no, much worse places than Houston. Now, enjoy your all year riding weather! And gets some 700 X 25 MAXXIS Re-Fuse clinchers.

I’ve just moved to Austin from California. There are some bad roads in california. All the roads here in Austin are bad.

Edit to say that I haven’t had any flats from this–just that the cracks and potholes and uneven seams are constant and jarring and unpleasant.

still trying to find some routes that are longer that won’t take me through a lot of traffic.

Riding within the city limits is just crazy. You need to get out past the 'burbs for some good riding.

South past Pearland
Southeast around Clear Lake
West past Katy
Northwest past Cypress in the Waller/Hockley area
North around The Woodlands and Magnolia

Can you drive to a starting location? Just head south. If not, Almeda/FM 521 may be a bit sketchy north of McHard, but south it opens up and you are soon accessing rural roads.

FYI, the roads this year are especially bad because of the drought and high heat. Even the rural roads are in bad shape because of the weather.
