Hot spots and speedplays

I have been riding speedplays for several years and in IMMOO 05 about 75 miles in I got severe hot spots. I can unclip wait a minute and it goes away for alittle while. I bought new shoes, my shoes were 7 years old. Now 2 weeks before IMLOU on my long rides the same thing is happening. Should I switch to Look or Time pedal? Help need with remedies.

I’ve been using Speedplay X pedals since they came out. Never had the problem, but I’ve always used very stiff-soled shoes. Are the shoes you’re wearing carbon-soled? Try the stiffest-soled shoes you can find. (You’ll love the sensation of power transfer versus softer-soled shoes.) Also, I use an over-the-counter orthotic insert made by a company called Sole.

I hope you solve the problem.

Oh … you might also try this. If your shoes have only two straps, make the one at the top of your foot snug, then spread your toes wide inside the shoe before you do the lower strap. This gives your toes room to move but the shoe is still being held snug through the arch. On 3-strap shoes, snug the top two and spread your toes before you snug the bottom one. This little trick really helps keep your feet/toes from aching on longer rides.

I get the same thing around 60-65 miles with my SpeedPlays. During training I will get off the bike and walk the bike for 5 mins. The feet feel fine after this break and the runs I do afterwards seem much easier. I use SuperFeet inserts, but they haven’t helped. But I am thinking of changing shoes to see if that makes a difference.

I was in the same situation. Switched to Look, and have no trouble.

Zeros - Look carbon tri shoes

I was having hotspots on 60+ mile rides. A week before Placid I moved my cleat(or cleat shim) back as far as possible and it was much better.

There was also a thread about cleat extenders that speedplay sells to move it more towards the center of the foot.

I second the Sole products. Worked for me.

Speedplay cleat has a larger contact area with the shoe than Look or time, the pedal is smaller but the preasure applied it transfered through the cleat to the shoe and not the pedal.

I am pretty sure the problem is the shoes not the pedal. I have used time equipe and RSX Look Delta and Keo and Speedplay Zero and X so teated them all since clipless came out.

Take a look at insoles or New shoes even socks - some of the better euro socks have a finer foot bed and this helps hot spots as well.
