Typical front double set up is 46/36 or 46/38. Rear as needed based on course.
Single ring 42T with 11-26
.
I’m no vet, but I run a single 40T Rotor up front with 12-28 in the back.
Db
generally 44/36 up front but ran a 46/36 this weekend. Saturday, could’ve used a 48.
Cassettes are typically 11-26 or 11-28 but vary depending.
Real men run the entire course…
46/36 with an 11/28 for me.

not a veteran. love it love it love it though. I do ok- for a triathlete hahaha.
I run a 46/34 with a 12-26. I really would like to switch next year to a 44/34, 12-28. I also have a mtn. bike cassette with 32t that I bust out when I want to ride single track.
For the first 2 races of the season I was forced to run 50/34 12-26. Needless to say, the 50 got 10seconds of use in my quest for the hole shot. Indeed- my 46 gets almost no use (only 1 race this year I actively shifted to big ring for a massive down hill then later on a pavement section)
Most of my team mates run 36/46 or 34/46 and 12-26or27.
I run a 46/39 front and 11-32 rear 'cause i like to trail ride with it too. The most popular cassette around here seams to be either 11-28 or 12-28. Make sure you test some gear ranges out, ideally you want to be able to ride all of the terrain in your races, except of course for the forced dismounts. If you plan on trail riding maybe go for a second rear wheel with a wide range. Remember to match the cassette size to the appropriate derailler.

38 x19 SS
might switch it up to 38 x 17 for last race of the season cause it is a flat course.
54-42 front, 11-21 rear. Anything else you’re just pushing air.
42 front 11/28
Ran 12/25 last year and depending on your courses that is usually fine. We have a few courses with some long hills that you can save a lot of energy on if you are geared a little lower.
54-42 front, 11-21 rear. Anything else you’re just pushing air.
You should drop that 42 and go 54 single in front.
I have a 1X10 with a 39T chainring up front. I can also run it 39X17 SS.
You could go super saucy w/ 1X9 and a bar end shifter

You’re right, the 42 is worthless. Before this thread came up, I didn’t know cranksets or cassettes came any easier, but here I’ve been catching shit for all these years for not running a 55/44…
