Hookers...sweet!

The bicycle(s)…I won an Ebay auction for one, and it was delivered via UPS today. I’ve wanted one ever since wrenching on one back in…oh…1994? They’re just sweet looking machines…

The previous owner had not used this bike in a while, and I will be stripping it down and sending it to get repainted (any recommendations?). However, since so much of the bike is proprietary…is there anything I need to be aware of when I start taking components off?

  1. The seatpost seems to be stuck…I’m pretty sure the seat height is adjusted via the vertical bolt that runs through the seatpost…can anybody confirms this before I start dripping Boeshield down the seatpost?

  2. The Hooker brakes…looks like they need to be rebuilt…any hints?

  3. There are three hole behind the headset…one obviously goes to the rear brake. If the other two are for the derailleurs…then why are there cable-stops on the downtube? Can I remove those?

Just to keep it on topic…it (I haven’t thought of a name yet) will eventually be built up for triathlon racing, with the occasionally training ride. The Cervelo P2K will stay fixed for the track and regular TT’s.

My only advice to you is try to locate Dave Spangler. Also try to find a few other “pimps” out there. I know there are at least 3 or 4 in New Mexico. (John Frey, Bill Fox, Louis Abruzzo). These guys are serious TT junkies. There is one bike shop in NM that I know are real familair with the “Hoes”. LBS is Bike Coop in Albuquerque, sorry I don’t know the phone number. Hope this helps you out. I’ll try to get some pimps numbers for you if I can

Rusty

Andrew Coggan who used to post here had one, he sold it to John Cobb. Andrew can be found on Johns forum, also someone on slowtwitch had one so keep trying. They are a great bike with a lots of history,i got my first look at USCF nationals in 91,It sucks when guys like John Frey are in the same category

What material is the seatpost made of? If it’s aluminum, you’ll need amonia (or something like that) to break it free. Check out Sheldon Brown’s site for details.

i’ll send an email to my old roommate asking what he does. he has at least 1 hooker still maybe 2 and used to own a bike shop.
those frames made aero aero

Dr.Coggan also posts regularly on Gordo’s forum. You should be able to find him quite easily over there.

“Andrew Coggan who used to post here had one,”

I lurk on Gordo’s site once in a blue moon and noticed that he hangs out there quite a bit.

Sorry to take up space in this thread about Hoes, but the correct link to El Gordo’s forum is THIS ONE.

Can’t help you with your Hooker questions, but that is one phunky ride. Guess you could say it’s pretty pimp.

here is the answer my friend sent.

The Hooker seat post has a wedge on the bottom and back of the seat post that cinches to hold it in place not unlike an old stem. To unstick and old style stem you are supposed to loosen the bolt and then tap the top of the bolt with a plastic hammer to release the wedge. Since the bike has some age it may take a pretty good jolt to loosen it but it should work. I do not think it would be frozen in the traditional sense because that seatpost typically fit very tight to the frame, though dripping some liquid wrench around the post and leaving it for a few hours would not hurt.

Thanks everybody…this is a long-term project, so I will post pictures and updates whenever possible. Man, I just cannot get over how pimp this thing looks.

Word.
