Anyone going to Honolulu for the race this weekend? I’ll be there to announce.
The ITU race on Saturday will feature Simon Whitfield, Greg Bennett, Beven Doucherty and Hunter Kemper. The women’s side has Bard Linquest, Emma Snowsill and Laura Bennett.
Age group race on Sunday with just over 1,000 athletes. Z
I will travel all of 5 miles to race on Sunday and watch on Saturday. Slowtwitchers “Tai”, “Larry” and others will be racing too. Look forward to meeting you.
Is GATORADE the “fuel” for Sunday’s race?
I guess that Greg B and Laura Reback got married in the last 12 months given that you refer to her as Laura Bennett now.
I’m going to be there to watch this Saturday. Will be hanging out on the Kilauea Ave. hill to check the bikes. I’m not competing on Sunday, though. Still a little too early in the season for me.
of course I’m making the one mile trip down to see the race;) Actually I think it’s more like a half mile to the top of the Kilauea climb…
Can’t wait for it, love watching the pros and we’ve got two local athletes in the race this year. One got a sponsors exemption and the other one is on the US junior team and is supposed to be the “next big thing” in American shortcourse triathlon. Funny thing is, I’m almost betting on our exemption guy. True, I train with him so I’m cheering for him the most but he held up well racing against the Canadian team 2 weeks ago, led most of the swim, fastest bike split and a decent, well okay slow by ITU standards, run. If only we could switch the run and bike times around for him…
Will be doing the age group race on Sunday as well. Praying for no almost top 125 ITU ringers to enter the race. I already know of the Filipines national champ who will be here and one of the Canadian guys who sliced up his foot on the coral 2 weeks ago… Plus our local fast guys.
An idea, I still have my “slowtwitch Hawaii” banner from the Keauhou half ironman last year. I could hang it up and we could meet and get a group Hawaii shot. I’m guessing logistically this would be near impossible but you never know.
Already here, been here since Saturday. We’re doing a photo shoot with some of the ASICS-sponsored ITU triathletes…Victor Plata, Brian Fleischmann, Samantha McGlone, Natasha Filliol, etc… I’ll be watching the ITU races on Saturday and racing, along with Tracy, on Sunday. Should be fun. Aloha
BTW, if you’re in Honolulu and you see a thin, blonde woman decked out in ASICS blazing through the park, it might be Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist Deena Kastor.
Hey Shawn, were you one of the guys there at the UH track this morning? I was one of those guys running around the track making an attempt at intervals. The guy wearing the Oakley Dartboards which totally don’t match for running;) Hope your shoot went well.
Yes - Gatorade will be on the course - just landed - site looks great - they are putting the final touches on the swim start! See you at the race meeting. Z
I propose that everyone join hands and make a pact to dislike anyone living in Hawaii. It is simply not right that they get to live in paradise.
People always tell us we’re “lucky” to live in Hawaii. I always answer, “no, we’re smart to live in Hawaii”. Like Tai, I grew up here, lived on the mainland for a while, it was okay, but there is no place like Hawaii. One benefit of living in Hawaii is that our friends come visit us regularly.

With no jobs, no home and one way tickets we moved to HI. Not lucky, just gutsy, just do it! Aloha, Larry

I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but it’s not necessarily all that nice to live here. Gas prices and home prices are among the highest in the nation. For $750,000, you’d be lucky to find a 30 year old 1,500 sq. foot fixer-upper home in Honolulu. Besides the high cost of living, wages, especially for professionals, are roughly 1/2 what you get paid in most big cities on the mainland. And after talking to my friends from the mainland, I’m convinced that Honolulu is the most bike-unfriendly city to ride in. If it weren’t for me and my wife’s family living here, I’d be on the first plane out.
But enough about me - tourists, please come and spend tons of money in our beautiful state. And if you have nice looking daughters, please feel free to let them stay here a few extra days. ALOHA!
