Honolulu Marathon & Heat

I’m doing the Honolulu Marathon and it’s going to be relatively hot for me. I’m from Seattle and it’s a balmy 50 right now. Honolulu is minimum 75 and high is 88.

I’m considering sleeping in 75 plus degree bedroom temps in an attempt to heat acclimate. I’ve got 4 plus weeks to do it. Any thoughts?

If you run around three hours it will not be “hot”. If you run five it will. The race starts at chicken thirty so the first hour or so is dark. The day heats up so the longer you are out there the longer and hotter the day. Run fast and enjoy our islands. G

Listen to G- man, he has it right. This will be #14 for me, no trouble yet

Aloha,

Larry

my then girlfriend ran honolulu coming from the cold of denver, co. she didn’t have much of an issue with the heat. it will obviously be warmer than what you are used to, but not terrible. i would be more concerned about winds than the temps.

Well I appreciate the good thoughts but 75 is hot for people from here. Every year I do a couple of races in the islands and usually have trouble with the heat. Last year I did the last run of the year. I was wiped by the end of the race and it’s only 5 miles. It’s along Pearl Harbor and it’s humid there and I believe the marathon is going to be humid too. Maybe we’ll get some nice cool breezes.

Cheers

We don’t really factor humidity into the weather, because we are a small island. The whole island probably averages around 60%. However on the “dry side” it may be as low as 40% but three miles inland or Mauka they may get 150 more inches of yearly rain than Waikiki and have 100% humidity a good bit of the time. The marathon is on the leeward “dry” side and it is dry as a stick in Hawaii Kai.
