Living on a permanent bugdet, I thought about getting a disc, but no way I will pay $400 for a Renn Disc wheel and use it half dozen times a year.
Solution came watching the ‘‘favelados’’ people who are EXTREMELY poor here in brazil, they use this bike wheel cover with ferrari logos or soccer team logos stamped on it!
The cover match almost perfectly my 650 wheels, they are slightly smaller (made for MTB wheels), but the only problem (that might have an solution) is that the cover is not rigid. I can see it becoming a parachute for cross winds, and slow me down.
i was thinking about something to put underneath it, and thought about some PVC plastic or something, but with the PVC cover, the wheel cover would be done, no need to the ‘‘ferrari’’ cover anymore…
So, has anyone here ever thought about a home made wheel cover?
Can’t stop laughing thinking about getting to the bike Check In with a Ferrari Logo on the back wheel!
Going along with my “man that guy seems old” string of replies I just wanted to point out that you used to be able to buy a couple different wheel covers right out of Performance or Nashbar. Can’t remember who made the cheap one but it was basically a lightweight metal rod that was cut and connected at the ends to make a wheel sized hoop. Then you installed plastic clips with hooks facing out and alternating sides with each spoke. The hoop was set on the wheel cover and the excess material was folded over the back and a drawsring pulled it all tight. It then snapped into the clips but seemed to have a tendency to pop loose while riding.
Wasn’t it Zipp that used to make those mylar covers? Can’t remember the company for sure but do remember a Pink one that Mike Pigg used to use (Pigg Power). Am I crazy? If it was Zipp it looks like they came a LONG way.
I remember those funky old wheels - it was “J-Disc” and not Zipp who made them. They even came with patch kits for when holes got put through the fabric!
Isn’t there some sort of rule that fairings are not allowed? Although it is stupid to ban these based on that rule since they are not more effective than a zipp or hed, I still see these, as well as the hed jet wheels, as being fairings.
Yeah, UniDisc made those nylon covers.
Lightning Disc made a “rigid” plastic type of disc that was held on with screws/spacers going through each side. I had both, the the Lightning disc was actaully pretty cool… I wonder what happened to them.
