Home made disc wheel assistance

Hi gang,

I’m in the process of gathering information regarding building my own disc wheel. While I might save a few bucks doing it my self, (or not, if I screw up teh first one or two) but that is not my prim motivation. I love tinkering with things. Bikes are great. Carbon is cool, why not combine the two.

I THINK I’ve got most of it figured out but need some help.

I’ll use a relatively standar box sectionrim (Mavic Open Pro is my current choice) lightweight foam core, flat, about 19mm thick (TBC)

I’m wondering about a rear hub. with a flat section to the disc, I need a hub with flanges that are 9.5mm (nominal) each side of the centreline of the hub. Unfortunately I haven’t seen such a beast. If I use a standard hub, then I’d have to build an asymmetrical lenticular disc and this would add another layer of complexity.

Does anyone know if hubs with equidistant flanges (about 20mm apart) are available? Please advise. any helpis greatly appreciated.

Ken Lehner is the SlowTwitch resident authority on DIY disc wheels. There has been much information previously posted on this topic including tutorials on how to. Do a search and you should come up with a “wealth” of info on this subject.

As for the wheels, if I recall correctly, Ritchie made a wheelset that had “zero” as part of its name and the big feature of this wheel was the rear hub was engineered to significantly reduce or totally eliminate the unequal spoke tension between the drive side and the non-drive side of the rear wheel. They touted that this made the rear wheel stronger and more durable. This was accomplished by moving the non-drive side hub flange towards the midpoint of the axle as the drive side is (necessitated by the cassette placement). I think this is the type of rear wheel you are looking for. It would be bilaterally symmetrical.
