We had already negotiated the price on line. We test drove it for 10 minutes. We paid cash. The transaction took 3 hours. WTF?
I was at a dealer for, I think 5 - 6 hours - had already test driven the car, - had financing totally lined up and ready to go - had thought we had the price nailed down before arrival (drove 200 miles to buy the damn car) - with a 5 and 3 year old and 7 months pregnant. Miserable experience! Buying cars sucks ass as far as I can tell.
Gotta try to sell you the extended warranty and other various profit added products. Just be an ass and tell them to stuff it. It does work. My last one only took an hour.
It’s a far too time consuming and unnecessary process. I understand it’s a piece of property and needs to be titled and all that but I’m not sure why it needs to take more than an hour after you’ve test driven it and decided to purchase.
I bought a new vehicle earlier this year and it probably took 5-6 hours.
You gotta have a guy. I gotta guy. I have gone to him for years and have purchased a lot of cars from him and sent him many referrals. So, when I get a new car, I am there for 30-45 minutes. They will do all the paperwork before I get there. But, that is only b/c I have purchased many cars from them. You would not believe the number of people who back out at the last minute. So, they won’t invest the time to do all the paperwork until you are physically there and locked in. They are serving other people and/or doing other things as well. They know I am not going to back out, so, they will do everything in my absence. But, it took several years to get to that point. I don’t blame them.
<<Holy crap, why does it take 3 hours to buy a new car?>>
Because for the most part the people who sell you new cars are douchey huckster twatwaffles who think they’re playing some sort of triple reverse psychological mindgame with you when they’re really just pissing you off. Either that, or they can’t read or add too well, and so it takes them a while to sound out the instructions for completing the paperwork.
Because the buyer is almost always a total dumbass. Yea, the process is the way it is because of the buyer.
Because they gotta get the deal cleared by the manager, the boss, the owner, the chick in accounting, the UPS guy, the dude who’s making coffee across the street…
*PUDDY: Let’s finish this up. *
*JERRY: Did you two break up? *
PUDDY: (While punching up numbers on a calculator) That chick’s whacked. We’re history. (Back to the transaction) I just left out a couple of things:
*rust-proofing… *
*JERRY: “Rust-proofing”? *
PUDDY: (Reading off what he’s adding up on the calculator) Transport charge, storage surcharge, additional overcharge, finder’s fee
*JERRY: “Finder’s fee”? It was on the lot! *
*PUDDY: Yeah, that’s right. (Continues reading off) Floor mats, keys… *
*JERRY: ‘Keys"?! *
PUDDY: How ya gonna start it?
twatwaffles
I’ll be using that one tomorrow.
Yes, the process sucks. They still use dot matrix printers and kill 27 trees per car. It’s an ancient process that somebody somewhere is making money off of for unnecessary “regulations”.
Wife wants a Lexus convert. Gonna be ugly at the dealership.
Anyone have a Tesla and is the process the same?

and I was pissed off because it took me 45 minutes including the test drive.

I told them I had a client who was an F+I and I was going to buy everything through them. It shut the woman up very quickly and we were out of there in no time because they knew they weren’t making any money off of us.
Another key is to go in when you know they are about to close, they will rush you out of there.

I vote this the stupidish comment ever on the lavender room.
Kind of like NCtri said, tell them if it takes over an hour you are walking.
Customer: We sat here right in this room and went over this and over this!
Jerry: Yeah, but that TruCoat–
Customer: I sat right here and said I didn’t want no TruCoat!
Jerry: Yeah, but I’m sayin’, that TruCoat, you don’t get it and you get oxidization problems. It’ll cost you a heck of lot more’n five hundred–
Customer: You’re sittin’ here, you’re talkin’ in circles! You’re talkin’ like we didn’t go over this already!
Jerry: Yeah, but this TruCoat–
Customer: We had us a deal here for nine-teen-five. You sat there and darned if you didn’t tell me you’d get this car, these options, without the sealant, for nine-teen-five!
Jerry: All right, I’m not sayin’ I didn’t–
Customer: You called me twenty minutes ago and said you had it! Ready to make delivery, ya says! Come on down and get it! And here ya are and you’re wastin’ my time and you’re wastin’ my wife’s time and I’m payin’ nineteen-five for this vehicle here!
Jerry: All right. I’ll talk to my boss. See, they install that TruCoat at the factory, there’s nothin’ we can do, but I’ll talk to my boss.
**
Customer: ** These guys here–these guys! It’s always the same! It’s always more!
**
Jerry: You goin’ to the Gophers on Sunday?
Salesman: Oh you betcha.
Jerry: You wouldn’t happen to have an extra ticket?
Salesman: You kiddin’!
**
Jerry: Well, he never done this before. But seeing as it’s special circumstances and all, he says I can knock a hundred dollars off that Trucoat.
Customer: One hundred–You lied to me, Mr Lundegaard. You’re a bald-faced liar. A fucking liar.
Customer’s Wife: Bucky, please.
Customer: Where’s my god damn check book? Let’s get this over with.
Kind of like NCtri said, tell them if it takes over an hour you are walking.
As someone who is not old enough to buy a new car, but has gone with my dad to get a few, I say this is a good principle. I would add or change to, “if you mention one thing we hadn’t already agreed on I’m walking.” I get that they have feelings yada yada, but what the hell if you went to the grocery store and the cashier told you, oh by the way you get to pay for this dishwasher also, you wouldn’t put up with it.
Seems to be a special industry.
