for my 1/2 marrys i’ve only payed less than 100 once… all races are going up in price
All of my half marathons have been free.
But I was by myself ![]()
i run the all the New York 5 borough half marathons, those are around $25/each.
What 1/2 marathons cost over $100?
I understand that there could be a premium for a race if you show up the day before or the day of, that may bring it to that much.
If you pay by August 15, the Las Vegas RNR 1/2 is $100. If you wait, it goes up to $135!!!
COME ON!!!
It’s not like it’s an MDOT race.
well, the full looks like a bargain at $105.
seems like they are gouging the 1/2 participants.
The previous RD lost $$$, looks like R&R figured out how to make it profitable.
Still - I think it’s the most expensive RNR event out there.
Why does everyone think they can overcharge, just because it’s Vegas!?!
Price gouging like this give my city a bad name.

If Vegas has a bad name, I really don’t think it’s because of the cost of its half marathons!
Yeah.
The President didn’t help either recently when he said that a corporate retreat in Vegas was wasteful.
…Of course a corporate retreat in Topeka (I have nothing against Topeka)…
All races are getting too expensive, in my opinion.
I like the local 5k’s that are like, $5.
I was a race director for a small triathlon, and we charged $30, and made a ridiculous amount of money, even though only about 50 participants showed up. Good fund raiser for collegiate xc team.
Every time something like this comes up I say “Where’s the transparency of the event?”. How much do these things really cost to put on and how much is really just greedy profit (like the CEO’s who fire thousands of hourly paid employees and then give themselves multi million dollar bonus for a job well done?). I bet that in the little events the organizers work the hardest and make the least, but in the biggest events the big shots do the least and make the most. Comments? Tim
New Bedford, MA - $35 this weekend
.
If a race fills the night before the event, then the organizer priced it correctly.
If you think a race is too expensive, race somewhere else.
It’s a great country where both the organizer and yourself have the freedom to make those choices.
There are plenty of races under $100. Even a full marathon. You have to look around. I will say that for the most part the more expensive race are better organized. But I did do the Richmond Marathon for $95 and it was a well attended, well organized race.
Funny I’ve never paid more than $65 and I’ve run a ton of them over the years.

Erm…
If the course runs along the strip itself, I imagine it costs a pretty penny to shut down the strip access during the time that the race is going on. Then add in the police, medical, etc etc.
While they are probably making money, I don’t think it’s near as much as you think it is.
John
Actually, they don’t close down the strip for the race.
Southbound traffic is diverted into one of the northbound lanes.
The race happens during the lightest period of traffic of the day.
The view isn’t even all that great - as the sun comes up (about 1/2 hr into the race), the hotels turn the neon and lights off, and the strip looks like a really bad hangover. There is trash all over the streets from the guys who hand out adult oriented business advertisments, and it smells like the trash bin behind a restaurant (magnified because it’s like that for the first 6 miles of the race).

Another reason to not run it.
Everything costs more in Vegas. People go and for some reason feel it’s ok to drop $80 on a steak, play Hold’em till 5am and lose $1000… but then want someone to save them when they default on their mortgage. Vegas is an effed up place.
I know many people gamble… I just don’t get the mentality of “I only brought $1000 - once that’s gone I’m done…”
But then… at least they are in vegas running.
