HITS Palms Springs 140.6 winner - 8:56

Ricardo Garcia

Quick search he did 4:37 at oceanside - anyone know of this guy? Seems like weather was perfect for the flat course. Now I am kicking myself for not doing it!

Does anyone know if this was the first sub 9 in a HITS full?

Legit and well done to Ricardo.

So, what was the CEO’s time and how many beat him for free entry into next years race?

.

Run course was short 3.2 miles. boooo! I supposed that guy still would have an impressive time of 9:2x … which still would probably be fastest at a HITS race

CEO did 12:38 … 49 people beat him

Wait, WHAT?

In what fresh hell does a run course end up being wrong by that much?

Especially an out and back
.

I know Ricardo. My wife met him on course in Kona or Louisville (can’t remember) a few years ago. We’ve stayed in touch over the years. Ricardo is a legit athlete and even better guy. Very happy to see a good result for him like this.

Yep… I did the half and measured 11.6 miles… From my bike… not even the timing mat. Unfortunate.

I ran the full and the run course measured 23.0 mile by my watch. The bike was 1.2 mi sort as well, but that’s almost inconsequential in comparison to the run. Feedback I heard on Sunday was that the course for the sprint was short too. I won’t be doing any more HITS events. No credibility.

I got 55.7 miles for the bike… So I do not agree there.

All the courses were just loops. So if one was short, they all were… Obviously something went wrong there. Other than that, I thought the race was great. I could care less about the “credibility” of the distance. Racing is racing. Put out your best effort, and have fun.

My folks were spectating and spoke to Mark Wilson. He said there was a police/city issue requiring the change and assured them it was still “USAT legal”. I suppose that is the 10% fudge factor I have often heard about. In any event, I think it was still even short of that.

Maybe someone at HITS messed up, maybe they were just screwed. Either way I do think its frustrating that the athletes never find out about this stuff. I did the Silicon Valley Half IM a couple years ago, run was way short, I think the RD came on here later and apologized. Last year I was a pacer at the Malibu Half Marathon. One week after the event, sick of all the complaining, they finally admitted “ok, we moved the start back due to safety reasons so it really was 13.7 miles”. I came in at 1:45:30 or something, really felt I had dropped the ball, but it wasn’t my fault, no one told me.

I just think it’s frustrating that RDs seem to all go the “maybe they will won’t notice” route. I guess they’d rather deal with the fuss after than before, but I’d appreciate a heads up.

It’s also funny to overhear all the finish line convos between people who don’t race with watches. “Wow I’ve improved so much, I just ran 10K faster than 2 times my 5K PR!”… People deserve the truth!
